Anybody else get an eerie feeling that an accident is just waiting to happen around Syria?

"The U.S. military has had to divert two aircraft over Syria to ensure they could maintain a safe flying distance from a Russian fighter aircraft in the same area, according to Captain Jeff Davis, Pentagon spokesman."

The US seems to be trying to come up with a new angle and try to keep a foothold in this war.

If the Russians wipe out ISIS then the US has no excuse to bomb and fund insurgents inside Syria.

The Iraq thing is whole other wrinkle...

Iraq leans toward Russia in war on Islamic State:

Iraq may request Russian air strikes against Islamic State on its soil soon and wants Moscow to have a bigger role than the United States in the war against the militant group, the head of parliament's defense and security committee said on Wednesday.

So that is Assad and Iraq saying they would rather be bombed and invaded by the Russians.

They are unlikely to shoot each other. More likely to collide, considering how crowded the airspace over Syria has become. There's an effort to make this seem like more of a US-Russia conflict than it actually is. The intended audience is the primary third-party, KSA, which the US and Russia would like to see cut funding to ISIS.

Anytime the US is running air ops they are going to have an AWACS aircraft in operations with a crew directing traffic.
