Stood up during caucus and said he was out of the running
BREAKING ON MSNBC right now
McCarthy stood in the meeting and said "I am not the person to be the face of the party," according to a source inside the meeting.
"He didn't want to divide the American people. He didn't want to divide the Congress. I'm not the man for the job," says Rep. John Flemming (R-LA).
From CNN:
Washington (CNN)House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has dropped out of the race to succeed House Speaker John Boehner, in a shocking move that reflected his inability to gather the support of the Republican caucus.
The move comes as House Republicans were in a closed-door meeting to select their nominee for speaker and came without any warning. Boehner has postponed the vote.
Members had no indication the move was coming. "Totally stunned," said Rep. Peter King on CNN.

(23,664 posts)Seems like I read yesterday that some GOP 'critter said he would not support anybody with scandals in their past. And I also remember a rumor that McCarthy may have been rubbing bellies with one of his female colleagues (both married to other people).
So I don't believe this has anything to do with McCarthy's bumbling explanation of the Benghazi committee. If they cared how stupid their speakers were, Boner never would have gotten the job in the first place. IMO, there are some things Cong. McCarthy does not want to come out.
