Unfortunately he's very small I think because the URI...he's on meds and I keep cleaning his eyes...he's a little too lethargic and I'm worried.

(15,805 posts)Outdoor cats are at a high risk for diseases and your little puffball looks both too young and to little to have the necessary reserves or a strong immune system to hold out on his own. Kitties like this often pick up nasty illnesses, cocci, URI, FIV, and food alone isn't enough to treat him. Factor in the stresses of being captured, weaned, no mom, strange new digs, new foods, and big scary people, and he needs some professional help.

(112,141 posts)She is doing well now and her gut is hanging low. I've began the discussions with my brother about getting her spayed, but hopefully we will have a few months more before we have to do it.
BTW, his markings will get darker as he ages. Josie used to have a cream colored back when she found me, but her markings along her back range from mocha to chocolate now.
Sending good vibes from Josie, my calico AC, and me.

(13,772 posts)Syringe feeding can help him get the nutrients he needs while the antibiotics work. Adult cats don't eat when they're sick, either, but they have bodily reserves to draw on. This poor babyis too little.
God bless you for taking care of him. Hugs from Tennessee!

(47,209 posts)but I had to get it for my wee kitten when he had "the kitten flu" and would't eat or drink. call them now!
I had to split a human pill into 1/5 or 1/6 or something, and it worked really well.
If you can get a packet of fort flora and/ or some unsalted chicken broth lightly heated up?

(47,209 posts)It is very common for cats to pick up "feline herpes" when young and those are the symptoms. Mine got it, and the appetite stimulant helped. They just need to eat to recuperate.
afterward, just some pitches of lysine powder on her food keeps it in check- the flu is a one time, but very dangerous thing!
call ANY doc and ask them for it. mirtazapine worked very well after just about 45 minutes.

(26,403 posts)I'm not a VET, but there is one called ciproheptadine which I've used frequently in the past. Another is mertazapine (sp?). None are expensive, but have to be prescribed by a vet. So, this should be added incentive to take your baby in for evaluation.
On Edit: There is a tube based product you can buy at PetCo/PetSmart which is for kittens. It's a food supplement and meant as a source of quick calories. Not to be used as the main food as it lacks some essentials (like Taurine).

(65,616 posts)That is where all the stored meat would be, if not (can't feel each bone) he is in petty good shape. If you can feel each one and they are protruding, you might have to take him to emergency care.
All my hopes go toward a speedy recovery.

(18,318 posts)of a vet work-up on the little guy. Some localities have good animal rescue/humane treatment centers which will cover expenses for a first-timer (he has complete ears).

I fostered one recently that was very sick with a URI. I syringe fed him 3 mL every 3-4 hours during the day and once during the night. It took 4-5 days of that before he started eating on his own.
On edit - I also gave my foster Pedialyte a few times a day to make sure he stayed hydrated.

(2 posts)Mix a couple teaspoons of canned tuna with a little water in a bowl. Or use some baby food jars of chicken, veal, or beef to lure her to food.

(9,933 posts)I lost a sweet little kitten once long ago who similarly would not eat. Waited too long to get help (through the night). Hope he starts eating soon and lives a happy healthy long life.
