Kasich on Social Security cuts: "You'll get over it."

Washington (CNN)—Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Friday that a New Hampshire audience member would "get over" cuts to Social Security payments as a result of his reform plan -- and the left is already pouncing on the comment.

-----------snip-----------

He asked audience members to raise their hands if they were far from receiving Social Security, asked them if they knew yet what their initial benefit would be and then asked them if they would be bothered if it were a little lower for the good of the country.

One person said it would be a problem.

"Well, you'd get over it, and you're going to have to get over it," Kasich joked.

banker with Lehman in Columbus for about 8 years, (2001-2008) in between Congressman and governor. At Lehman, Kasich made hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock bonuses on top of his executive salary, enriching his and his wife's net worth in assets to $9-22 million. So much for the politician known for blue collar heritage.

>No John, people will not 'get over' cuts to vital Social Security benefits.

I have an important issue that will affect me. That being, the cut to my SSDI check that will happen next year unless the congress does something about it.

I'm barely able to pay for my apartment rent now. If the 20% cut goes into effect next year, I am screwed. I will have to try to find another cheaper and less secure place to live.

I also don't make it through a month without making a visit to St. Mary's Food bank because the money I do get does not last. I also take a lot of medications. I regularly have to decide on buying food or medications. I often put off refilling my meds until I get my next deposit.

What gets me about these sh*t heads, is where do they get off telling me to just get over it. I'd like to kick Kasich in his ass all the way back to Ohio.

It is not right that if you pay payroll taxes on the first $113,000 or thereabouts that you earn and then can, at your discretion, choose to save money from everything you earn over that amount in a 401(K) or IRA or other instrument while those who earn maybe $40,000 a year pay their payroll taxes and cannot save more than that.

Payroll taxes should be imposed on every cent earned on anything in the country. The rate of the tax should be reduced so that the amount placed in Social Security covers the cost of the benefits paid out and puts a little in the Social Security trust fund each year.

For many, many if not most Americans, Social Security is the only retirement savings they have. That is especially true for Americans who were in their 50s and early 60s maybe even late 40s, lost their jobs due to the 2008 crash or corporate takeovers and bankruptcies, had to spend down their savings including their retirement savings and are now completely dependent or will be completely dependent on Social Security for their entire livelihood.

Remember, we all pay taxes. We all pay sales and property taxes. When you consider how little Social Security pays most recipients in a month, you have to think that just paying one's property taxes can take a month or two or more of the benefits from Social Security.

I think the average Social Security (and it is virtually the same as the median because the benefits are capped) is around $1,337 per month. That is just a bit more than minimum wage pays per month based on a 40-hour week. (Maybe $90 more.) (2080 hours per year divided by 12 x $7.25 per hour)

http://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/quickfacts/stat_snapshot/

Before Republicans reduce Social Security benefits and refuse to raise the cap, I would ask them to try living on $1,337 per month. Their lifestyles will change drastically.

I think at this time members of Congress earn $174,000 per year (if not officers in the Congress). That's about $14,5000 per month -- more than ten times the amount the average Social Security recipient is paid after a lifetime of work.

Granted, members of Congress work hard and have to maintain two households or rent something in DC, but still, they should not be willing and should not consider reducing the income of the 1/3 of seniors who rely totally on Social Security for their livings.

We have to stop the Republicans if only in order to save Social Security.

And, by the way, I do not think that Hillary Clinton is as strong a supporter of Social Security as Bernie is. That is because of the longstanding Clinton relationship with Pete Peterson arch-enemy of Social Security and with Wall Street in general. Wall Street covets the money that Americans entrust in Social Security.

How's about trying to live on $839/Mo. If it weren't for the fact that my partner died while we were building our new house, it would not be paid for by his insurance, and I would be out in the street. And, may still soon be. I am now 4 years behind and the county is telling me they are going to seize my property and sell it for a song to some realtor, just so they can get a mere $11,000. Have had 18.5 ac on the market and only one nibble months ago. A friend of mine the same age was talking with me the other day and he has had his place on a lake on the market for the last two years and not even a nibble. In order to sell, the prices have to be dropped way down to bargain basement pricing where the homeowner gets screwed out of their built-up equity.

Kasich only won by 2% against Ted Strickland in the depth of the recession. Fools blamed Strickland.

Since Kasich took office he refused Fast Rail money that is badly needed. Then he tried to kill Public Unions. That exploded in his face with 1.3 million signatures to put it on the ballot. That won a big No vote.

He retreated to do his dirty work in private, cutting School Funds, shoveling funds into his friends Charter Schools.where we have a scandal a month exposed by Investigative Reporters. It is so bad the Republican Legislature passed a bill on strict over sight.

He did take the ACA money.

Now,he is selling the prisons to his friends. So just guess what he would do in the White House?

He built up a rainy day fund now that the economy is better. Schools have begged him to use some of that.

But he will soon be gone. As for living in Ohio. The cost of living is great. I love the change of Seasons, the lush green, plenty of rivers and aquifiers. I will stay here, thank you very much.

"Kasich joked." Think about that one.

What he considers funny and what I consider funny are two different things. The problem with the ideological right is they have started to believe their own propaganda.

Anyone that advocates cuts to entitlements is, in fact, an extremist. For all his posturing to the contrary, now you know Kasich for the extremist he is.

Take from the least and give to the wealthy. Whenever they talk about "cutting" anything, it is the poor, the sick, and the elderly - they have no power, so they'll "get over it".

I understand that Governor Kasich thinks that Social Security recipients should anticipate lower payments "for the good of the country" and that they'll get over it when their payments are lowered.

Here's what I think, Governor, and I am already drawing Social Security. You need to get over your aspirations to
be President and go back to Ohio and stay there. This country needs Bernie Sanders for President, not you.
So get over yourself, you a$$hole.

When Trever Noah pressed Rachael Maddow with the question "if someone held a gun
to your head, and forced you to say 'If you were a Republican, which GOP candidate
would you most support?" .. Rachael couldn't answer, kept trying to not say, laughing
her ass off, etc .. but finally blurted out "... OK .. Kasich" ..

I kind of thought the same, watching the first GOP debate. So this just goes to illustrate
just how bankrupt the GOP is, in terms of having any humanity or sense of doing what's
right for the "little people".

FUCK THEM ALL!!!

I seriously don't think they even want to win , not really, or they wouldn't act like this; which
is curiously related to this OP of mine, about how lame the DNC/Democratic Party is these
daze, and why that is.

http://www.cnbc.com/2015/10/08/medicare-part-b-premiums-to-rise-52-for-7-million-enrollees.html

I would bet that the majority of Republican candidates would like to see this "hold harmless clause" be eliminated (so what if your Social Security goes down?), besides which they would want ALL "welfare" Social Security and Medicare programs to end totally.

Too poor and cannot save enough for your old age? Just beg on the streets, or die.
