Is there anything preventing the Rethugs from getting rid of their Hastert rule?

The one that says they have to be able to pass everything without the votes of any Democrats? It seems that that change is at the root of so much that is wrong in their system.

Do we follow the same rule now, too?

I wish we could go back to the old system involving coalition-building and compromise between the parties. Yes, I know compromise is as much a hated word here as it is among the tea party people.

But compromise and coalitions got us Lyndon's Great Society and the Voting Rights Act. We could use some of that now.

So they can buy the most corrupt Congress possible and make out just fine. Compromise and coalition-building doesn't make them richer these days. Getting whatever they want when they want it makes them richer. And making them richer is the most important thing in the world. It drives everything.

Enlightenment and joy take a back seat to the obsessive-compulsive hunger for more money.

Any Republican speaker who dumps the Hastert rule will be called by the far right and primaries by a right wing challanger, and be labeled a liberal/moderate.
