Days after secretive negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership concluded, WikiLeaks has published the complete chapter on intellectual property. The leaked text shows the TPP would expands monopoly rights for pharmaceutical companies to help protect against competition from generic drug manufacturers.
According to an analysis by Public Citizen, the text also requires TPP countries to stop generic versions of biologic medicines (biosimilars) from being available to patients, even when there is no patent. This effectively means lifesaving medicines will be more expensive and harder for sick people in TPP countries to afford and access.
Twelve countriesAustralia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnamnegotiated the TPP.
Although U.S. officials, like Pentagon chief Ash Carter, have made claims TPP would promote government transparency, the deal has been shrouded in secrecy. It will not be made available to the public until some time around November 7.

(24,692 posts)Top pharmaceutical industry executives walked out of a meeting at the White House late Thursday unmoved on their disappointment that the landmark trade pact falls short of their demands for 12 years of monopoly protection for biologic medicines.
Now the compromise threatens to blow up the deal in Congress. A good compromise usually results in something of greater overall value for all the parties involved, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said on the Senate floor Wednesday. And, at least according to the information now available, it is unclear whether this administration achieved that kind of outcome for American innovators.
Besides expressing frustration with the deal, the drug industry hasnt yet indicated how it will play its cards. One industry source said pharma wants to see all the details of the deal in writing first, adding its strategy is pretty formless, right now.

It may be worth waiting to see what is in the actual text when it is released. Big Pharma does not seem too happy at the moment.

People will die so wealthy people can be assured of becoming even more ridiculously wealthy? And, this is what Democrats are supposed to support?

(16,254 posts)My dr. is trying to talk me into biologics, but I'm dragging my feet for many reasons. 1) not all insurance companies will cover them, 2) they are new and I don't think they have enough history, 3) I'd be on them for life, so what happens if the pharmas figure out a way to dodge the rules and I've already started the program with more living to do. I can't stop the shots, so I'm trapped. Being at the mercy of pharmas is not something I'd look forward to.
I hope that CEO who mouthed off about being more interested in what his stockholders wanted than helping sick people get well...something like that. Did we create these monsters? What did we do, mollycoddle them to the point where they think they are better than the average Joe? Time for social media to take them to the woodshed.

Welcome to government of, by, and for corporations.
In the former USSR capitalism beat communism. Now it's well on its way to defeating democracy as well. Just as the plutocrats planned it.

FDR thought he caged the beast but he never anticipated the modern reichwing, even after the plot Smedley Butler exposed.
