A Blue-Eyed Frog, a Snub-Nosed Monkey, and a Walking Fish Are Discovered in the Himalayas

A new report looks at more than 200 species found in the region over the past six years.

A Sneezing Monkey
While residents of northeast Myanmar know the snub-nosed monkey well, scientists didn’t hear of the species until an expedition into the country’s forested Kachin region in 2010.

When it’s raining, locals say, the animals are easy to find, because rainwater gets stuck in their upturned noses, causing them to sneeze. A second population of snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus strykeri) was found in China along Myanmar’s border.

Beautiful but Poisonous
With its ornately decorated skin pattern, it’s surprising that the Himalayan lance-headed pit viper avoided detection until now. Its large body size and yellow, red, and orange color pattern differentiate the snake from other Asian pit vipers.

Its venom is poisonous to humans, but the toxicity level of this new species remains unknown. The snake was found in various locations in the Eastern Himalayas, including southern Tibet, northeast India and western Bhutan.

Nature never gives up all her secrets. Considering our record of damaging/eliminating them, I'd say: fortunately.
