I live in the Florida Keys

It is now a little after one thirty a.m. I'm not usually up at this time.

I'm watching as the bus picks up workers. Most are from Haiti and they have at least another two hours to travel back to the Florida mainland where they can afford to live. They will sleep four hours and return to cook and clean. They are not illegals, but what a hard life they lead! They send most of their money back to their family members in Haiti so they can survive.

Mr. Trump: I never wish hardship on anyone, but I wish you could walk in their shoes for one day.

as shitty as the Mexicans.

That's a long drive from Key West to Miami where most of them probably live. Plus they have to go over the 7 mile bridge. I hated that when I lived in Key West.

Many people don't realize that Key West is closer to Cuba than it is to Miami.

You're right - the Haitians have it tough.

I lived in Miami from the mid 70's through the late 80's (The Mariel Boatlift happened back then) and it became clear that if you arrived by boat from Cuba you were in, no problem, but if the boat came from Haiti, you were screwed.

The Miami Herald editorial page cartoonist (the great Jim Morin) did a toon back then that showed the Statue of Liberty with the lines of the quote at the base, with one addition;

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

..

Hold the Haitians."
