Expanding the search for oil is necessary to pay for the damage caused by climate change, the Governor of Alaska has told the BBC. The state is suffering significant climate impacts from rising seas forcing the relocation of remote villages. Governor Bill Walker says that coping with these changes is hugely expensive. He wants to "urgently" drill in the protected lands of the Arctic National Wilderness Refuge to fund them. Alaska has been severely hit by the dramatic drop in the price of oil over the past two years.

(58,785 posts)Alaskans are, of course, relatively well off because of oil, and he needs to sound as if he is trying to keep it pumping.

(45,984 posts)Maybe it's something in the water up there, but if that were shown to be the case Walker (or that other person of whom we're thinking) would propose allowing the oil companies to pollute with impunity so that Alaskans would have to stop drinking it.

(95,337 posts)one of the first things this guy did when he got into office was take the money to expand Obamacare.
So he has some smarts. But then again not too much of them but at least better than the Failin' Palin From Wasilla.

(46,436 posts)although wrong on this issue. He has been doing many positive things since coming into office last year, including expanding Medicaid by executive order over the loud objections of our republican legislature.

(7,484 posts)Just how stupid, Texas has Gohmert, Perry and GW. Ohio has Boehner, Kasich, Dewine. Alaska has Palin and did have Young. Wisconsin; Walker and Ryan. But South Carolina may have won; Wilson, DeMint, Gowdy, Kincannon, Graham, Scott, Haley and several lesser but equally dense contenders. Perhaps we should have a Red State "Moran" contest.

(53,984 posts)We have whole buckloads of more conservative nitwits than measely old South Carolina. How dare you suggest that our stupidity only extends to Louie Gohmert, Dubya, and Governor Goodhair! Hell, you've barely scratched the surface. We got the dumbest Goddamned Lieutenant Governor in the country, Dan Patrick. We gave America Rep. Lamar Smith, a science denying chairman of the House Committee on Committee On Science, Space & Technology. We have Rep Blake Farenthold, who stood out for stupid at the recent Planned Parenthood hearings by suggesting that women could go to children's health clinics to get their pap smears instead of PP. And we got absolute world class stupid with our beloved junior Senator Ted Cruz who's so rightwing even the Republican Senate Caucus can't stomach his antics.
No one outstupids Texas conservatives, mister... NOBODY!!
We're not worthy ;0.
EVERYTHING!!!... is bigger in TX.
The amount of conservative stupid in this country is a fast fast fast race to the bottom. As if pure dumbass is a positive, ignorance a virtue and lack of a single brain cell a stepping stone to a long and and fruitful career in public service.
But in defense of Ohio, we did have a guy, Rich Iott, who thought as dressing up as Nazi on weekends was a wise political move.

Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)and we're feeling a pinch right now with the price of oil down. With Walker, I'm sure it's not that he hates nature, clean air or fresh water but that he's trying to sustain an economy here that's gotten used to oil at high prices.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)the coastal plain is much preferable to offshore, IMO. Of course I would prefer something completely unrelated to oil as our economic driver, but for the moment it is what it is.
