https://twitter.com/hashtag/IndigenousPeoplesDayThe article has more good links to recent news. I add my city, Portland:
These 8 Cities Just Abolished Columbus Day
In the past two months, eight cities got rid of Columbus Day in favor of adopting Indigenous Peoples Day. Three of those cities adopted Indigenous Peoples Day this week.
Albuquerque, New Mexico The citys formal declarationencourages businesses, organizations and public entities to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, which shall be used to reflect upon the ongoing struggles of Indigenous people on this land, and to celebrate the thriving culture and value that our Indigenous nations add to our City.
Lawrence, KS Since September, students from Haskell University in Lawrence, Kansas have been taking initiative and pushing for the city to honor their ancestors by declaring October 12th Indigenous Peoples day. Just this Wednesday, they won.
Portland, OR Portlands City Council declared Indigenous Peoples day on Tuesday, something tribal leaders have been seeking since 1954.
St. Paul, MN In August, St. Paul followed Minneapolis by declaring Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day. Minneapolis passed its own resolution last year.
Bexar County, TX The resolution was passed Tuesday, and local activists intend to press for the same thing in San Antonio.
Anadarko, OK In September, Anadarko declared Indigenous Peoples Day. Anadarko Mayor Kyle Eastwood signed the proclamation while surrounded by tribal leaders from the Apache, Choctaw, Delaware, Wichita and others.
Olympia, WA Mayor Pro Tem Nathaniel Jones presented Olympias proclamation at a rally in August. Nearly 150 people showed up to support the initiative.
Alpena, MI In September, Mayor Matt Waligora declared Indigenous Peoples Day. The city says they desire to develop a strong and productive relationship with all indigenous peoples, including the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, based on mutual respect and trust.

(51,129 posts)Columbus initiated the trans-Atlantic slave trade, in early February 1494, first sending several dozen enslaved Taínos to Spain. Columbus described those he enslaved as "well made and of very good intelligence," and recommended to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella that taxing slave shipments could help pay for supplies needed in the Indies. A year later, Columbus intensified his efforts to enslave Indigenous people in the Caribbean. He ordered 1,600 Taínos rounded uppeople whom Columbus had earlier described as "so full of love and without greed"and had 550 of the "best males and females," according to one witness, Michele de Cuneo, chained and sent as slaves to Spain. "Of the rest who were left," de Cuneo writes, "the announcement went around that whoever wanted them could take as many as he pleased; and this was done."
Taíno slavery in Spain turned out to be unprofitable, but Columbus later wrote, "Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be sold."
The eminent historian of Africa, Basil Davidson, also assigns responsibility to Columbus for initiating the African slave trade to the Americas. According to Davidson, the first license granted to send enslaved Africans to the Caribbean was issued by the king and queen in 1501, during Columbus's rule in the Indies, leading Davidson to dub Columbus the "father of the slave trade."
From the very beginning, Columbus was not on a mission of discovery but of conquest and exploitationhe called his expedition la empresa, the enterprise. ...........

(1,683 posts)The Democratic party base in the northern states was primarily concentrated in the large cities and political power was held by the "3 Is" (Ireland, Italy, and Israel). Columbus Day was based on Italian-American pride and to them it was the equal of MLK Day to African-Americans. It was established by the Democratic congress as a "pay off" for their political support.

(6,843 posts)It matters not that in America, Columbus Day is the day to honor italian-americans and their contributions to America. It is so much more fun to pretend that Columbus Day is the day to honor Columbus and his accomplishments. Of course, you should sip your pumpkin-latte at the local Starbucks with your iphone 6 made in China while you vigorously condemn western civilization and somehow forget that you are a part of it too.
