A former patient of Ben Carson, the retired neursurgeon and GOP presidential candidate, claims he is a liar who ruined her life by botching surgery on her brain tumor. I regret ever having met him, Karly Bailey told TheWrap. I wish I didnt.
Bailey, who was 9 years old when she went under Carsons knife in 1995, claimed the future candidate went against her familys wishes by removing her brain tumor in its entirety, despite her parents repeated demands that the growth be only partially removed due to its proximity to the brain stem.
I made the worst decision of my life when I agreed to let him operate on my daughter, her father, John Bailey, told TheWrap.
According to the family, the operation left Karly, now 27, paralyzed on her right side and suffering from vertical nystagmus, which causes severe dizziness. When she finally went back to school after more than seven months of intense rehab, she was so disfigured that she was bullied by fellow students.

(50,934 posts)Turns out we aren't allowed to say anything negative about Ben Carson's work experience. Because he's Ben Carson.
You can say whatever nasty thing you want about Hillary or Bernie, but Ben Carson is off limits.
Because this is DU, and that's how we roll...
ETA: Just watching the way this guy operates, I'm sure there are plenty of these stories in his patient history. Thank you for posting this.

We really are tougher on our own than we are on the Repukes.

(18,868 posts)They are out to get him. Strange because the are very right wing and usually go after Hillary and Bill and Obama.
Makes me wonder what's going on.
They reported several cases.

(46,311 posts)She said she was 9, in 1995. That's 20 years ago.
So she should be 29. Or maybe 28, almost 29.

(111,222 posts)Perhaps the rapid assay from the pathology department showed the tumor would recur quickly and that she'd need the same surgery a couple of years down the line. Maybe it was starting to invade the upper spinal cord (which is what it sounds like).
Every neurosurgeon out there has had cases like this, where the outcome was a living but compromised patient.
Brain surgery is hard, yo, which is why it's one of the benchmarks we use for intelligence.

(3,003 posts)That the operations are being preformed on children make them even more risky then they already are.
Some people have said it here before, but his past endeavors make it all the worse that he's trying to get into politics. He could have retired with a very favorable reputation from his work in neurology but that's going to go down the drain because of all the comments he made during his campaign.

In this case, while he should not have gone against the parent's wishes, I got to question the wisdom of only removing part of a brain tumor. Even if it's benign, it's in the brain. You can die from a benign brain tumor.

(2,518 posts)...and as much as I agree with the notion that "He's a liar," I can only ask this young woman who had a tumor removed from her frikkin' brain as a child and survived:
Would have preferred the alternative?
