In dismissing Sanders' proposal for free state higher ed, Ms. Clinton said she didn't want the public to pay for Donald Trump's kids education. Well, I can easily support covering the 1%ers if the rest of us get in there too.
The true fallacy of that meme is the idea that a 1%er would want their kids to attend anything other that an elite private school. If they will pay for private K-12, they won't flinch at the cost of private higher ed.

(45,251 posts)public university. However, if Trump were to pay his fair share of taxes, why shouldn't they be able to go, if they wanted to? They could have gone to public grade school, middle school and high school if they wanted to, right? And Bernie is saying that a college degree today is as necessary as a high school degree was fifty years ago.
If Trump were to pay his fair share of taxes, then he and his family should have their fair share of benefits from tax dollars, too.
Our problem now is, they are not paying their fair share of taxes AND they are using/taking more than their fair share of America's resources.

USA! USA! USA! The best, except when we're not.

(17,086 posts)Is this about means testing for free public college? I'm against it. It would be an insignificant fraction of those taking advantage of the opportunity, and a benefit to pluralism.

(5,995 posts)Only the for profit vultures would lose. You'd still have to do the work and put in the time, but no lifelong debt burden.
eta: If you have a different plan to make college more affordable, tell us what it is instead of a trotting out Trump or his kids.

(101,306 posts)whether Cambridge or (hmm, which university do I want to insult as being at the other end? ....) Wye College (small, now closed down - I should be safe there ...). There was a means-tested maintenance grant for living expenses, but everyone took it as fair that the tuition costs were born by central and local government.

I wonder though... if college was free for the less fortunate, would there still be enough financial aid for these kids to attend private colleges? Could it actually create kind of an underclass of college graduates who would be seen as less qualified for higher paying careers?
Now, with enough financial aid and determination, poorer kids can and do attend elite private schools. Wonder if they would be shuffled off into a less prestigious system.

(5,995 posts)They might even be inclined to provide more incentives to attract kids that could go to a top tier state school without having crushing debt.
Again, the ones with money wouldn't worry either way.
