Watch the moment a gorilla named Koko falls in love and becomes the adoptive mother of two kittens.
To celebrate her 44th birthday, staff at the Gorilla Foundation in Redwood City, California, introduced Koko to the kittens - and her reaction was adorable.
After taking a look at the kittens in their box, Koko scoops up one of them, named Ms Gray, holds her in her arms and gently brings Ms Gray close to her chest.
Koko has learned to use over 1,000 signs and understands about 2,000 spoken English words. Through this she is able to communicate with staff at the Gorilla Foundation.
Later in the video, Koko be seen asking her trainer in sign language to place one of the kittens on her head.

Koko the Gorilla Crying following death of her Friend Robin Williams.'She became extremely sad': Carers for the world's most intelligent gorilla claim she was 'close to tears' following news of Robin Williams' death - 13 years after video captured the two becoming fast friendsNews of Robin Williams' untimely death hit particularly close to home for famed sign language gorilla Koko, who handlers say was moved nearly to tears by the somber mood shared by all at her Northern California home.
Staff at the Gorilla Foundation were, like much of America, in mourning after hearing the news Monday. Williams visited their center in 2001 and quickly befriended Koko, making her laugh for the first time in six months.
So when they explained to Koko, who is fluent in American Sign Language, that a dear friend of the center had died, she soon became sad and is pictured sitting hunched over with a quivering lip.

(111,230 posts)We're messy eaters and our crumbs attract their prey. Besides, they're one of the few critters out there that doesn't have to be trained to like us. Primates in zoos have long been noticed to attract and adopt feral cats.
KoKo will be a good kitty mom. The kittens looked completely comfortable with her.

Although I will say we did hate mondays and love lasagna.

(3,626 posts)and one of their (my) favorite books is/was Koko's Kitten. Published 1985. Happy Birthday Koko.
The book was about Koko and her sign language, but especially about her 'mothering' AllBall, her adopted tailless kitty. (Who Koko named.)

(13,598 posts)If you watch videos of her with Dr Penny Patterson and her other keepers, it becomes apparent that the interpretations they're putting on her actions are very, very subjective, and she's probably not nearly as smart as they make her out to be.
By contrast, videos on YouTube of Sue Savage-Rumbaugh with bonobos (Kanzi, Panbanisha, Teco et al) are truly breathtaking, partly because, unlike Dr Patterson, they use genuinely rigorous methods, and go to considerable lengths to disprove explanations other than their apes understanding a great deal of language and being extremely intelligent.

(1,307 posts)about Koko's alleged abilities. It seems like her keepers are predisposed to interpret Koko's actions a certain way - to read everything as incredibly human and sweet. They seem very biased and not very critical, unfortunately.
Thanks for the tip on Sue Savage-Rumbaugh. I'll be looking those videos up!

(38,309 posts)... we don't even see it here at home.
If we can't recognize fully sentient and intelligent beings among our own genetic kin on this earth, creatures we share great chunks of DNA genetic code with, then there's no chance in hell we'll recognize intelligent life in the cosmos beyond earth.

Her mother was very protective of her, and got a lot of exercise walking around the Gorilla Pit with Koko in her arms. while the adult males followed her around.
I think her father was named Bimbo (but I could be wrong about that)
