As far as I am concerned I am no longer watching SNL

I don't care if SNL brings in a politician or for that matter even a Candidate to do a skit. It was only 2 weeks ago that Hillary Clinton made an appearance for one skit. I know in the past even Sarah Palin made an appearance back in 2008. I'm fine with these things. And for that matter I would even be ok to have Donald Trump even make an appearance. When these politicians do these skits they are scripted and not free airtime to do speeches.

But I am sorry but this is BULLSHIT to give Donald Trump an entire show to host which also includes giving him 5-10 minutes of monologue where he can basically do free campaign stumping. (All hosts get an opening monologue with SNL). What's worse, SNL is allowing someone to host who has been openly RACIST, openly MISOGYNISTIC and openly HOMOPHOBIC to host the show which is also utter BULLSHIT.

Plus the fact that they are giving him that entire show, which really will the other 14 candidates also be offered equal time to host along with having 5-10 minutes of airtime to give their stump speeches to the fans of SNL? It's one thing to have a candidate do a skit and I'm sure SNL would be more than happy to allow any other candidate to do a skit similar to what Hillary did a few weeks back (and that was a scripted skit). But I highly doubt that opening monologue that Trump will be given will be scripted.

As far as I am concerned SNL is no longer on my TV viewing schedule. Shame on them for giving Trump a platform to spew his racist, sexist homophobic crap!

that a homophobic, racist, sexist candidate is handed over the entire show and essentially gets free publicity? How much would that creep have to pay not just for that much airtime but also for an ad that has been crafted by some of the best creative talents in television?

The host ISN'T "handed the entire show". He does a monologue (scripted by the writers, and 2-3 skits (also scripted by the writers.

Now, if Bernie Sanders is invited to host (fairly likely if he wants to) you'll stand on your principles, right?

SNL's attempt for relevancy in the new media era has to been to sanitize their program, such that political commentary is a very small part of the program, today. Chase's Ford, Akroyd's Carter, and Ferrell's Bush don't have any analogue in the present program.

Screw it.

It's one thing to let a politician and/or candidate to do a skit. It's another thing to give them an entire show including 5-10 of free air time where they have a monologue to say whatever they want to say.

But I see your point. And not only will he get most of the show to promote himself (he's Trump...he'll promote himself), but then moments of it will be replayed again and again on the Sunday/Monday news shows, giving him more exposure.

We can hope that it turns into a PR disaster for him (like, he does something really stupid or embarrassing or the show makes him into the butt of a joke), but I agree with you. No candidate should host the program. An appearance is fine (but even that can help sway an election like Nixon's appearance on Laugh-In did, apparently); but hosting it I think can really give an unfair advantage.

Just my .02 cents.

He keeps bragging that he has had seven billionaires on since the show started a month ago. TheRump is one of them. I think idolizing and normalizing billionaires is a pretty bad idea as it may lead some people--especially in business--to try ever more desperate tricks and ripoffs to get themselves to billionaire status and be considered a "success."

John McCain hosted in October of 2002 which was about 6 years before he ran for president and that wasn't even a presidential election year.

Ben Affleck was the host on the episode before the 2008 elections and I don't think he was running for office. McCain and Palin were in skits (my OP mentioned Palin, forgot about McCain). I said in my OP I had no issues with that because those are scripted and the politicians aren't given much leeway to go into their own speech. A host gets an opening monologue and the chance to speak openly and possibly unscripted.

I know politicians have hosted but usually not during elections. Gore has hosted, I think so has Giuliani and yes McCain. My other issue is that Trump is extremely racist, sexist and homophobic. It's one thing to have McCain as a host during a non-presidential year. I don't like his politics but he's not an asshole. Trump is disgustingly vile and offensive. That I have serious issue.
