(38,264 posts)3. Our family had a Very Fine Adventure in Franco's Spain when I was a teen.
My mom has a habit of speaking her mind, even in very inappropriate circumstances to very pompous little men of authority, so my dad got nervous and we had to pack everything into the car and leave for France in the middle of the night.
The Spanish border guards on the twisty two lane road we took out of Spain didn't come out to greet us. My dad chose not to disturb them.
The French border guard asked my dad if he had any cigarettes and seemed very sad that we didn't, but he let us pass.
