ROCA, Neb. (AP) By the time he was 50, Otto Arlt had already survived an ocean crossing, a new and foreign home, and three brutal years fighting in the Civil War.
But he didnt hear the train coming that evening. He didnt see it in time, either.
The Burlington and Missouri special just a locomotive pulling a pay car had cleared a curve and was approaching a bridge between Lincoln and Roca.
Arlt finally saw the train and tried leaping from the trestle, the engineer told the Lincoln Daily Globe in June 1880. But he slipped and fell across the tracks.
FULL great story at link.
