NFL Player Covers Cost Of 53 Mammogram Tests In Memory Of His Mom

Black and gold may be the colors on his uniform, but DeAngelo Williams’ heart is pink.

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back has pledged to cover the costs of 53 mammogram tests -- to honor his mother’s age when she died of breast cancer in 2014, ESPN reported.

The foundation, which in addition to breast cancer awareness promotes literacy and education, has rallied a team of supporters called “Williams Warriors,” who have helped raise over $500,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Steelers.com reported. In December 2014, the organization partnered with Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute and Charlotte Radiology to host “53 Strong for Sandra,” an event, named in honor of Williams’ mother, that provided women with free mammography screenings and follow-up care, according to a statement from the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation.

After his mother and four of his aunts died of breast cancer, Williams has championed these awareness efforts both on and off the football field, dying the tips of his hair pink and painting his toenails the same color. However, some of his efforts have been met with resistance from the NFL who denied his request to wear pink accessories during games after October.

But in a recent NFL advertisement for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Williams explains: “Pink is not a color. It’s a culture to me.”

Simply beautiful, part of me wants to cry reading this. I lost a good friend to breast cancer. What Williams is doing for women, he does out of love and respect and that is beauty.

If you remember Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, his son Cameron plays for the Steelers. Cameron has been putting his father's name on his eye patches - IRON and HEAD - Craig died of bone cancer in 2006 at the age of 39.

i read more than I post , now.

i saw a great story about him .... he is just an amazing guy. My understanding is that he has painted his nails pink .... to follow the rules but also make his stand.

His mom would be so proud of the man he is.

I have made myself scarce as well. I come and I go.

Yes, he painted his nails pink, go to the link and see the great image of him and his teammates, it was from a twitter feed and I had no clue how to copy it.

He did his mother well, she would indeed be proud.

Hugs~

Generally they like to keep their good works in the community out of the spotlight so we don't begin to hear as much about them as we hear about the assholes, goons and abusers, who get the spotlight.

Warrick Dunn is the poster guy for Really Fine People who are or have been in the NFL:

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and other homeownership programs, corporate partners and members of the community, Warrick Dunn Charities has provided programming and services dedicated to single parents and children across the nation to improve their quality of life since 1997.

Initiatives include economic empowerment, education and wellness. With community and corporate support, Warrick Dunn Charities has awarded more than $2.5 million in cash, food and other donations to support sustainable futures through affordable homeownership and education assistance.

He's something else.

Sad that this has to happen in the United States today. The worlds most powerful and richest countries in the world and this has to be a headline.

for beauty.

Sadly DU has lost its way. We no longer care about the people. For the women that are dying every damn day from breast cancer, from abuse and from neglect.

Sad no thread about women make the top of the page anymore. I bet if I said Bernie supported women it would soar. If I said Hillary did, it would sink. I am embarrassed by DU.

What are the genetic odds of that? (I truly don't know). Makes one wonder if there is also an environmental factor at play that could be researched.

Thanks for that DeAngelo. I'm sorry he lost 3 loved ones to breast cancer. That sucks. I am happy he is doing something to raise awareness and help others. That's an amazing way to turn his own loss into something meaningful.
