Germany has a slightly more conservative system based on regional and industry-wide insurance co-ops (this was essentially Max Baucus's plan 5 years ago).

Why the American left picked Canada's particular (and fairly unusual) model as the hill we had to die on to achieve universal care, I'll still never understand.

Two nurses and a doctor in my family, they all *loathe* the health insurance companies.
