What if a woman had said that?
So Ryan is so special to his family? Terrific. Now let's apply that same standard when it comes to women, shall we?
Also, where is Ryan spending his "family time" now? I really don't know...
Just spelled out the conditions for "hiring" him. The "employer" either accepts his conditions or doesn't "hire" him. A woman can make the same choice. Hire me under my conditions or don't hire me. The employer can accept or not just like salary negotiations. Unions work the same way. They bargain for working conditions as well as for wages and benefits.

(1,683 posts)The employer needs to be up front with the working conditions during the hiring interview (e.g. This job requires two or three four day trips a month out of town) and the job seeker (man or woman) can then decide whether or not to take the job. Does a job requiring travel exclude more women then men? It sure does. Would it be fair to hire a woman and have her declare that she can't travel and force the others in the office to pick up the slack?

(63,903 posts)if you don't know that, you haven't been paying attention...
I've worked in several organizations where the women do lots more than the men. "When all is said and done, more is said than done."

(13,772 posts)Family time is probably the most important part of your life.
It doesn't matter whether he's a man or a woman. He's saying that his family is very important to him and he's not willing to give it up. He knows he might lose the job because of it and that's apparently OK with him.
Yeah yeah sure. Cause that works for everyone other than the wealthy and connected. Talk about delusional!

(6,679 posts)There are full time care givers who have no choice but to put family first. Most often they end up losing the current job and have to gain new employment that they can more easily juggle with family demands.
Yes it's rock and a hard place but when a worker gets down to "can't" then it is what it is.
The difference between "Joe six pack" and Paul Ryan is that Ryan will not end up in deep shit financially.

That takes breath-taking arrogance

Breath-taking arrogance on Ryan's part, though? Really, Malaise? I see it as principled and sensible. He can teleconference, etc., instead of flying all over the place. And after all, he doesn't want the job -- it wants him.

The House and Senate being in session are but a fraction of what the job entails. Working in their districts is not being 'off'.

That is exactly what this is all about. He doesn't
want to spend his time out on the road fundraising, and this is an acceptable alibi.

(58,785 posts)Paul Ryan because of his combination of extremism and talent. (Do you realize he could still run for president this year?) No need for villainizing when so much bad is very real.
Anyway, I like to think slinging mud's mostly a conservative vice. They certainly have a talent for that themselves, and of course, a tremendous enthusiasm.

(1,301 posts)...but he has said all along that this was the very reason he did not want the job. He has been pressured to take it in spite of that, so I can see why he put this out as a condition.
That being said, I don't know how that can be pulled off in reality, as Speaker of the House.

It would be good for him and good for the rest of us if he would simply never show up at work again. Heck, he can even continue to collect his pay, just stay away from congress.
I'm all for Ryan's family time.
