I suspect it's Ryan's hypocrisy that's being criticized, not his desire to spend time with family. Scuba Oct 2015 #2

And I'm really puzzled by all the sniping at Ryan for making this a condition of the job. Whether or not I like Ryan (can't say I do), I admire him for this particular sentiment. From everything I've read, it's sincere and not just a Family Values pretense.

The silver lining in the tome that I was unemployed was the opportunity to devote my full time to helping with homework, volunteerring for school meetings/activities, etc. But I have bills to pay and mouths to feed, so I do what I can.

I agree. That's going to be the problem. He wants time with the family, but doesn't support FMLA, etc.

only wants to do it part time. I wonder how many people with at least his family values are working two and three jobs to try and support their families and will probably not approach his $50,000 upgrade in pay to $223,000. The job has certain requirements. If he cannot meet them he should not take the job and they can find someone, perhaps with no family ties, to do the Speakers work.
Just like the infamous clerk, Kim Davis, if you cannot do a job because of your values, family or otherwise, you should seek other employment especially if it is at the taxpayers expense.
And he is an asshole to boot!
