There is a special election for Supervisor (to complete an unfinished term) between the mayor's [puppet, Julie Christensen and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce's puppet Aaron Peskin (yes, you read this name correctly). I'm voting for Peskin to protect the rights of renter and to get SFPD off their asses and do something about the increase in vandalism and car thefts in our neighborhood. The other battle being waged citywide is Proposition F and I ask any San Franciscan on tis board to vote YES. Prop. F will curb the unmitigated disaster that is AirBnB, which has turned our apartment buildings into hotels.

(53,339 posts)I was mistaken about the school board seats--only 1 is for community college; the other is for the local HS district board, and that's the one that has a Party endorsement.
For the community college board seat, I know a prof who recently retired from the local junior college. He was a liberal activist in school politics, so I'll get his rec for that race.
For the water board I'll have to google the 5 candidates and see if I can find any info to help make a choice.

1). Sales taxes are regressive.
2). We have in the last 2 years had tax increases for Libraries, Sewers, Fire and Schools and I haven't noted any increase in the State Minimum wage. I honestly don't know how anyone is supposed to come up with the money for these tax increases.

(43,049 posts)I'm regrettably voting for a Republican council member for Supervisor because the Democratic on is a Republican who is just running for spite because he couldn't get the R nod. The current Supervisor is a tool running on a third line because the Republicans threw him out, too. Nobody has any clue how it's going to go down.
In the town next door that I just moved from, I am still a Dem committee member (long story-- committees are actually a county thing) and they are doing great even though they're underdogs. Great candidates and it's a good race. Hope we win something.
The town I'm in now, even though it's largely Democratic, has an inert and largely useless committee, which is largely responsible for the current foolishness. I hope we survive.
Oh, FWIW, I never, ever vote for judges. There's plenty of them always running, but I do not think they should be elected.
Retrograde
(10,132 posts)Some years back all the city and county offices shifted to even years, there aren't any local or state propositions, so it's quiet here in the South Bay. Next year we'll probably have one of those 9 page ballots to make up for it.

(1,290 posts)Democrats are trying to hold onto the Governor's office. Steve Beshear is term limited, but the current Attorney General Jack Conway is running. You might remember him as having lost to Rand Paul in 2010. The Republicans nominated Matt Bevin, who lost to the Turtle in the Senate primary last year. Conway had a 5 point lead in the last poll that came out, but some people think it's a tossup that just barely leans his way. It will be a tight one.
For AG, Andy Beshear (Steve's son) seems to have a 12 point lead and tons of money. Alison Lundergan Grimes has polled well in her attempt to get re-elected Secretary of State. Adam Edelen is the current Auditor and seems to have a slight lead on his Republican opponent; most people think Edelen is going to run against Rand Paul next year.
We also vote on Treasurer and Agriculture Commissioner. The candidates there are less well known and the races are tight enough that it might come down to coattails from the Governor's race.
