Without Obamacare 'I'd have lost the farm,' says Alabama farmer

Hank Adcock of Nectar lost half his right hand in a farming accident in June – but he'll tell anybody who will listen that he would have lost a lot more if it weren't for Obamacare.

"I'd a lost the farm, I guess," said Adcock.

The farm has been in his family for three generations, and Adcock has been working it for most of his 62 years. In June, both hands got caught in a hay baler while Adcock worked alone on Straight Mountain.

The machine yanked off his right ring and pinkie fingers, along with most of the muscle and bones connecting them to his wrist. He pulled the right hand out with his left, which then got caught, crushed and cut in the machine.

Adcock estimates that it took nearly 10 minutes to free himself from the machine. Then he wrapped up his mangled right hand and drove his truck – a stick shift – to the nearest house.

"Us country folk are tough," he said.

But now that the insurance companies are realizing that they can charge more, it's going to put more people without insurance.

I was just informed that next years coverage will jump 30%. I could barely afford my 2015 premiums, and cannot afford a 300.00 per month increase. I'm on a fixed income, and this increase will probably mean me and my wife will go without insurance. The only way to fix this is to go with single payer. We need free health care for all.

3. The journey is just beginning

Step 1. Contact ACA and find out available insurance companies.
Step 2. Contact my doctor to find out which of those companies they accept.
Step 3. Many hours of research comparing insurance companies.
Step 4. Make a decision.

When I first setup with the ACA, it took forever to get everything put together. Although I am more familiar with the process, it is not a process that I recommend to anyone. It has always been a hassle.

Wish me luck. The fun starts Monday.

On a side note, I sent a letter to the president to inform him how the insurance companies are gouging us. Perhaps the government can help offset this increase with tax credits. To date, nothing has happened.
