Instead of Shooting a Dog that Just Bit Him, This Cop Soothed It and Set the Bar for Cops Nationwide

http://filmingcops.com/instead-of-shooting-a-dog-that-just-bit-him-this-cop-soothed-it-and-set-the-bar-for-cops-nationwide/

Round Rock, TX — According to an unofficial count done by Ozymandias Media, an independent research group, a dog is shot by law enforcement every 98 minutes. (snip)

When Frederick knocked at the door, Wightman’s 4-year-old son ran to answer it. That’s when Jillaroo went into protective mode.

“The dog immediately jumped between him and the officer, and that’s when it was a little bit nerve-racking, because I was watching the dog bite him,” Wightman said.

After controversy arose in May of last year, when a Round Rock cop shot and killed a Rottweiler named Bullet inside a home, the department surprisingly took proactive measures.

After Bullet’s tragic puppycide, all Round Rock police officers were put through a mandatory eight-hour training period with an experienced dog trainer to learn how to handle situations involving aggressive animals, according to KVUE.

I just don't understand how cops can burst into a home and not expect a dog to react instinctively to protect the family. Kudos to this PD for providing training/policies to stop further horrendous acts towards dogs who merely love their "people"...

I don't have a dog right now but when I did (and when I do in the future) I could see myself becoming violent if a cop shot my dog. I did have an officer go into my back yard a few years ago without my permission and he's lucky neither dog was back there then.

my old dog got into it with a raccoon.

they were rolling around battling it out.

My mom was home along, and not knowing what else to do, called the cops.

two cops showed up. One older one, one younger one.

the younger one pulled out his pistol.

the older cop told him to put that away. then proceeded to get the hose and blast both animals with water.

fight over.

raccoon took off. Dog was fine, except for a few scrapes and bites (yes, he had his rabies and distemper shots).

Mom, thanked the cops and life went on as normal.

Wonderful dogs...smart as a whip. I couldn't have one (they're way, way too active for me, like most proper herding breeds), but I love visiting theirs.

What a revolutionary concept. With the success of this enterprise, maybe they'll begin to employ this sort of strategy more widely.
