(51,076 posts)old with all kinds of breathing problems (copd, bronchitis etc.) This part of getting old sucks, the rest not so much

(29,414 posts)and I'm only 54 and never smoked. Bronchitis completely sucks! I had that for about a year and a half, and finally gave up trying to cure it (both with antibiotics, and some herbal remedies.) My body seemed to cure itself a few weeks later.
I hope what you take works well for you. Symbicort is one of mine, and it works well enough that I don't have to use it or the Albuterol much at all, so it's all good

(51,076 posts)but right now I'm on Spiriva and foradil. they switched me to a new inhaler (Stiolto respimat) about two weeks ago and thats when my problems that I have now started. The VA can be good at times but sometimes I think they just want us old vets to die off. I thought the new med was going to be the cats meow because its a spray which seemed to get in my lungs better than the dry powder of spiriva and foradil does but it about got me down. Side effects. I feel like I have pneumonia with a touch of bronchitis all mixed together.
The corticosteroids tear me up. Make me swell up like a toad. after a few days I can't even recognize myself so I can't/won't do them anymore.

(29,414 posts)Now I can't remember the common one, but was a pill form my doctor gave me when I had a cold and bronchitis. It worked better than antibiotics, but had the nasty side-effect of draining the rest of my energy, and keeping me fatigued. I was glad to get off of it.
And it's weird how some things affect us and others don't, and different per individual. I had a nasty allergic reaction to naproxen just two weeks ago, and had been taking it for things like dental pain without any side-effects for many years prior. What changed in my body's chemistry, I have no idea, but I won't be taking it ever again now.
Anyway, I hope your doctor does get you on something that works great and with minimal to no side-effects
