40 Million Bad*ss Birders Just Declared War On Oregon Terrorists

According to an open letter addressed to the “Oregon Terrorists,” there are some 40 million nature photographers and bird lovers in the United States, and they’re pissed.

The letter, written by a wildlife tracker and nature photographer named Kevin, warns the militants who are currently holed up in Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge that “no small group of armed thugs is going to destroy the great wildlife and national park system that our great Republican President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir put in place over a century ago.”

Writing under the name Norwegian Chief, the author states that the entire birding community is up-in-arms over what is going on in Oregon:

We are watching your every move, and we have been watching you for a long time. And yes absolutely you are domestic terrorists of the worst kind, and the truth about your decades of constant poaching of protected wildlife around Malheur and other wildlife refuges, national parks, national forests and BLM lands has been well-documented. For years those of us who are wildlife photographers, birdwatchers and carers of wildlife, have been documenting the activities of you poachers and criminals around many of our nation’s wildlife refuges.

I can suggest, at a minimum, the following to help -

Attend birding events. Be a tourist supporting the nature economy. One impetus for rejecting these terrorists will be the local business owners who are losing money when people like you don't show up for the high profile events.

If you have more time and interest, take your camera out hiking and learn about photographing wildlife, and identifying signs of illegal activity, and document any that you see.

But just participating in the nature economy helps. And almost all of us can do that fairly easily. If you're on the East Coast, take your next vacation at Cape May or some other major birding site. Take your kids or someone else's kids with you so you can introduce them to the wonders of nature too.

Pretty much they say "I am a birder. I come to your area to watch birds. I spend money in your community to enjoy your birds. Help me by protecting your birds and lands."

That's not exact it but it's the gist of it. I try to leave a card wherever I stay, eat, and shop when I am on a birding trip.

the more we connect young people to nature and natural spaces, the greater their connection and establishment of a relationship to the outdoors - the greater their awareness to protect it.

"We know the nearby trailer park, who is supplying you with food, and a tourist boycott of them is already in the works for all birders for this upcoming bird season."

I couldn't believe it when I read the quotes from the owners of that RV park just outside Malheur, in support of those terrorist fools and scoundrels. Where do they think their business comes from? I guess they will learn now.

Thanks for the link!

Two example links are:

http://www.opb.org/news/article/militia-oregon-wildlife-refuge-burns-bundy-hammond/

I don't know what the name of the RV park but it is apparently located right outside the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The npr article indicates Gainer thinks "the federal government is too involved in local affairs." If Malheur National Wildlife Refuge weren't there, who would their customers be? I haven't read it explicitly stated, but surely those visitors are a significant portion of their business.

Some news reports say that the couple, the Gainers, donated leftover chili to the terrorists. Other reports indicate they are selling food as well as ammunition to the terrorists. There are also quotes like this from Ron Gainer: "I agree with a lot of this, I don't know why the federal government has to be here in the numbers that they are."

I hope this helps -

They blather on about taking "our" land back so WHY doesn't anyone ask them, so who gets the land, you? Are you going to divvy it up for all of us or is it some sort of evolutionary (threw that in for fun!) survival of the fittest, whoever gets there first kind of thing?

The cameras could be hiding anywhere, and birders don't wear redneck Sunday camouflage.

Tue Jan 5, 2016, 11:28 PM

Why is it that Bundys and Hammonds get 160 free acres from the government to homestead, and then decide they can't make enough profit growing cattle on 160 acres of sparse grassland, and they choose to lease more acres from the government so they can raise more cattle and make more profit (not just to raise their families...they probably could have done that on just the original 160 acres). So they deprive the government of the lease money so they can make more profit for themselves.

Is this greed? What else would you call it? Anyone else in this country would be so tickled to get 160 acres free from the government, and most of us who try to start a business that goes bust in the locale we are in, just go somewhere else to do it or start some other endeavor to make a living. We don't expect the government to give us more free land/equity so we can build our business in a bad location.

So why do these people who were given all this free ranch land deserve to have more land, and if they can't get it, they deserve to graze their cattle on government land for free, or they deserve to poach wildlife off governemnt land and then start wildfires on government land to hide their crimes?

Where do these people get off in believing they were "owed" these lands to do what they want with?

Nobody else gets this kind of gift from the government. Why should they?
