In a wide ranging interview Tuesday, Harney County Sheriff David Ward urged members of the community to distance themselves from the armed men occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

“I think if one person gives them a Snickers bar, they’re going on national media and claiming that the community supports them,” he said ...

The FBI is handling a criminal case against the armed men occupying the refuge since Saturday, and has told Ward that the men will face charges. The sheriff still believes a peaceful resolution to the conflict is possible ...

Ward said in the months prior to the occupation, Bundy’s group had made a number of people who work for the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service feel uncomfortable, following them or their family members around and photographing their homes ...

He was brand new to the job, but responded in precisely the sober-minded, patient manner that the situation called for. He played a big part in ensuring that things didn't rapidly escalate into violence. More than a few big city departments could learn from this guy.

... Lt. Jeff Stutrud, acting public information officer for the Marion County Sheriff's Office, said Tuesday afternoon that his agency has sent four officers to assist Harney County: two lieutenants (including regular PIO Chris Baldridge), one sergeant and a deputy.

Stutrud said two were dispatched Sunday, and another two the following day. Ward had reached out to the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association for assistance, which relayed his request to the individual sheriff's offices across the state.

According to Stutrud, none of the Marion County personnel is dealing directly with the standoff.

"None of them are actually at the scene," he said. "Lt. Baldridge is helping with PIO duties, and the others are helping handle calls for Harney County. There is a lot going on, a lot of calls" ...
