On two separate occasions I have noticed men walking on the sidewalk with objects strapped to their backs which could have very well been large knives. The first time occurred about two years ago. The guy walked toward me and I yielded the sidewalk to him because I was walking my dog. But I smiled and said hello as he walked by and he reciprocated. My dog had stopped to watch him, so I did too and that's when I noticed what looked like a "v" shaped leather sheath strapped to his back. I thought it was shaped like a khukuri.
Okay, no big deal. It occurred two years ago and I forgot about it until yesterday.
Driving out of the community, (same sidewalk btw), there was a man walking on the sidewalk and he caught my eye only because he held his gaze a little longer than most. As I drove by him I noticed that he also carried a leather sheath strapped to his back. Hard to say what it was. It looked flat and rectangular. If it was a knife, I would say it was bowie shaped.
Just wondering if anyone else has observed the same thing? Both were white middle aged white men.

(46,700 posts)It just does seem weird that grown men need to feel like they have to carry weapons in broad daylight. What does that say about the community?

(15,429 posts)I personally own a knife with a blade length of about 38 3/4 inches.
It's called a "rapier".
I don't walk around with it strapped to my side except when I go to the Renaissance Faire.
Yes, it is sharp.
