In the light of threats against the sheriff and his family in Oregon other militias might intervene if local officials or the federal government acts in any way with the occupiers. There is an element of risk if you ignore or act in this situation. And militias are egging for an open fight with federal authorities in particular.
I think that this occupation may really only the beginning of more aggressive resistance. Ironically people want to defy government until they are slammed by some kind of disaster. Hate radio and Fux News wants resistance and anarchy against federal and even state government unless it pursues draconian conservative policies.
Decisions on what to do are particularly gnarly because anything can happen. And it could be easy to lose control of events.

(86,318 posts)I had a brainstorm when I read about the campaign of the R frontrunner has some rep from NH out there now who was a player at the Bunkerville event... so I suddenly started to wonder if that particular candidate has been funding some of these kkklowns under the radar. And what if this is a well funded stunt for the opportunity of showing some "presidential" chops for a certain candidate just before the actual primaries start? Not that the argument used in this extension of the Sagebrush rebellion gang aren't so old they have a rind on them... But if this certain candidate has been funding some of these guys prior and promising them that their grievances would be happily resolved if he gets into office...
This also plays into the hands of the Congressional counterparts to the BunkerBoys who also want to privatize all the public lands. It is a major issue that cannot be ignored... but I suspect that there is a very wealthy, self funded candidate running for office who may be stroking these guys big time to perform in such a way as to advance the candidate's ambitions.
It was a wave of all the above thoughts all at once. I can't be certain there are dots to connect there but I smell fish wafting on the breeze all of a sudden. I wouldn't put much past the party in question.

(10,602 posts)The RW media is all about stirring these people up. And GOP hopefuls at every level play into the politics of anti government hatred. And this agenda makes this next election even more dicey. The GOP is desperate to get control of the White Houe and will pull out all the stops to win. And it looks like this election will be like no other because playing the racism card is now over the
shark. Trump's success is a symptom of how all the Southern strategy works.
The shocking part of all of this is now everything is boldly out in the open. The MEME is if you vote GOP you are turning the country over to the terrorists and minorities and takers.

(5,480 posts)but even if there were, 99% of these "militia" types are all talk. They're also usually dumber than a box of rocks. They're all good at telling other people to fight for them.
Sit back, relax, and laugh at the Bundy sideshow. If anybody is actually worried about these guys, remember: they couldn't even pack supplies correctly. They're hilariously ineffective. All of their "forces" are in a very small area. They're either not serious / not expecting any violence, or are just stupid.

(73,506 posts)You are correct. That does not change the way that authorities need to respond to the situation -- and I'm not implying that you are suggesting that -- but it is important that people understand their thought processes.
These fools are convinced that, if authorities use violence, it will serve as the spark that ignites their fantasized "revolution." In that sense, they are no different from Timothy McVeigh, who absolutely believed his terrorist act would signal the start of a "patriotic" revolution.

By letting them stay for a while, it will bring more out into the open and they can be arrested also.
