A North Bend man reported that someone cut the tails off of a colt and a horse, leaving the animals defenseless against flies when the weather warms up.
It can take up to four years for their tails to grow back, Bruce Tompkins said Thursday. A horse depends on its tail to keep the flies away.
Tompkins called the Dodge County Sheriffs Office after he noticed that the tails of Blue, a colt, and Rusty, a miniature horse, had been sheared when he went to feed them Sunday. He said Blue lost about 16 inches of tail and Rusty is missing about 2 feet.
Tompkins and his wife, Vickie, take in rescue horses and donkeys. They couldnt understand why someone would clip the tails until they learned that horsehair can be worth up to $400 a pound.
