Clearly it was rigged. Whether anyone won or not!

And no one who used a birthday in their numbers won since nothing below 13 was drawn.

(1,958 posts)I suppose I should have bought a Powerball ticket. I have enough problems without having to deal with hundreds of millions of dollars in cash.
If I did have matching numbers, even if there were several tickets sold that won part of the jackpot, nobody outsode of my family and attorney and broker would know about it. (My broker would have shat in his pants. We don't have a huge portfolio, but you would have seen $$ in his eyes.)

(89,247 posts)i would rather win maybe a couple million or so and stay anonymous than win 100m and my name made public for it.

(1,958 posts)Some states don't reveal names, others allow LLCs to redeem the winning ticket. I used to work for a PR firm with the lottery as a client. We always recommended that the Powerball winners do the news conference so that the media got what they wanted instead of camping out in their driveway.
You are right about winning a much smaller amount. It would still be life changing money without national attention.
I am amazed that the jackpot was not won. I wonder what the odds of that were?

(1,858 posts)It was a couple hours before the drawing, so that number may be slightly higher.

(89,247 posts)if i wanted to play and lived near any of these states i would probably buy a ticket from there .
not too surprised if nobody won since powerball was 13 and if people use birthday months none of those would have won.

(1,958 posts)the jackpots were much lower and did not attract this kind of attention. However, I am pretty sure that the vast majority of tickets sold were 'quick picks' and not chosen numbers. I always told people to not play special numbers. I told them that the time they did not buy a ticket with their numbers is when they would be selected.

ohnoyoudidnt
(1,858 posts)Other than that, I don't see how that is possible. I'm pretty sure the majority of winners are the people who actually purchased the ticket.

(26,549 posts)Your odds of winning if you don't buy a ticket is 0.
Your odds of winning if you do buy a ticket are very small...but far above zero.

On one of my 5 quick picks, fwiw. No trip to Tahiti here....
On edit: Apparently, the powerball number is worth $4.

(1,958 posts)The machine will generate random numbers. There is zero reason to buy more than one ticket, or maybe even one, but there is the slight chance that your numbers will come up.

(1,958 posts)I really don't bother with it much. As I wrote before, this jackpot is something that could ruin the family(s) who win.
(I personally know a family who are billionaires. My dad worked for the fily business years ago. I recently read about how a Minnesota Viking player went to a restaurant table full of young people and offered to pay their bill if his family could have their table. One of the young men refused, but gave up their table anyway. His grandfather is a billionaire.

(39,313 posts)That would feel great. I have zero concern that I would change my moral outlook, too old for that.
