To ensure you don't blow it all immediately.

So after paying off any existing debts, I'd figure out my new yearly salary. It's the money I pay me to put the rest of it "to work".

Then 2,5, 6. With trusts for nieces, nephews.

Then I'd look to buy into existing businesses. Might do this to help friends.

Then set up a charitable nonprofit that would become self sustaining.

But, all of it needs to be "engaged" so I can't just blow it all.

Then, my personal Salary is just for me. Create a budget, even if it's lots of money, and use that to travel, take some silly financial risks, do interesting things.

11. First I'd do the following things:
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 06:48 PM
Jan 2016

1. Get an unlisted phone number.
2. Hire a first-rate lawyer, tax accountant and financial adviser.
3. Wait until a very busy news day to claim the money.
4. Show up at the lottery office wearing a disguise (you have to collect in person) and accompanied by my lawyer.
5. Refuse all interviews with the media.
6. Hire a security service to watch my house while I disappear for awhile.

And then, I would:

1. Set up foundations for the benefit of arts organizations and animal rescues.
2. Donate generously (and anonymously) to other charities for the benefit of needy people.
3. Find a nice but not ostentatious house that's not as old, drafty and in need of upkeep as my current one.
4. Help family members who need it (they really don't need help, but I wouldn't want to seem cheap).
5. Keep a very low profile while doing as much volunteer work as possible.

I would also try to keep in mind that an awful lot of people who win big jackpots are broke within five years or so because they had no idea what to do with a lot of money and quickly spent it all on stuff or got scammed. Hence the need for a first-rate financial adviser who can keep an eye on things.

36. You can shield your identity if you know how
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 07:33 PM
Jan 2016

Texas requires disclosure of the winner but I have seen a couple of trusts claiming the prize and the only contact information is the name of the financial institution acting as trustee. Do not contribute the ticket to corporation, partnership or limited liability company in that you will be paying Texas margin tax on winnings (trusts are exempted).

Bottom line, check with attorney if you win. There are ways to shield identity if you do not mind paying legal fees and the fees of a trust company.

You would be better off doing the news conference at the lottery headquarters. If you don't give them something, they will hound you until they get something. How common is your surname? If your last name is Anderson or Johnson you would better able to stay under the radar. Of course, if you won the entire jackpot, then all bets are off.

The interesting thing is that there are super wealthy Minnesotans who go through their day to dayife without much attention (the Hubbards for example), but the general public see lottery winners as potential sugar daddies.)

In fact, there is at least one other person in my very neighborhood with exactly the same name. If I took the proper precautions and left town for awhile I could fly under the radar indefinitely. I think the reason lottery winners get pestered by all those long-lost "relatives" and "friends" is that they don't have experience with having a lot of money so they don't know how to lay low - they'll throw their money around too much and try to manage it themselves. "Old money" types have their people who manage it for them and can screen out the scammers and leeches. A lot of lottery winners end up broke in a few years because they don't know how to handle so much money.

I will know better. I've got it all figured out; I'll be fine.

(It's not my DU name.) In fact, if I were to Google my last name, I know every single person who shows up in the results. (Well, I guess I have not yet met the wife of a first cousin's son. They live in Florida.)

My family is not wealthy. About 20 years ago my dad and his brother went to see relatives in the 'old country' (USSR). My uncle was wealthy, but he died not long after that trip. My dad was then seen as the wealthy American relative who could help solve their financial problems. He got letters (they had to be translated) "my wife is ill, please send medicine&quot .

We are in contact with two second cousins. They do not ask us for money, but word would get out about money like this. I wonder, how much could we help them without ruining them and their lives?

I know, this is getting heavy. I'm not going to even buy a Powerball ticket. I have family members who I am sure are buying
tickets. Maybe they will share.

2. Make a hefty contribution to a scholarship fund at my alma mater.

3. Pre-pay their remaining college time for my three grandchildren who are still in school.

4. My wife and I each divide give our unified credits (5.something mill each) among our four children (each one getting about $2.6 mill).

5. Buy a moderate sized mansion (maybe 8,000 Sq Ft) and hire a caretaker and housekeeper at a good salary plus benefits and tell them that Ii want them to take care of things so my wife and I have no worries or problems with interior or exterior maintenance.

6. Invest the remaining in a good mix of income stocks, bonds, and growth stocks so that I spend the income each year and never touch the principal.

60. The annuity is a pretty terrible idea. There's a reason why none take it.
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 08:41 PM
Jan 2016

Even the financially savvy don't take the annuity, because the return rate is terrible. Basically, the cash out rate is the actual value TODAY. The $1.3 billion is the projected value after it sits in an annuity for 30 years. The problem? The return rate on the lotto annuities is HORRIBLE. As in, under 4%.

Even if you invest conservatively in a market fund that matches the S&P, you can easily pull a 6% annual rate of return. With a decent investment manager to babysit your portfolio, pulling a 10% rate of return isn't even remotely challenging, and an aggressive, risk taking manager could far exceed that.

If you took the lump sum, and paid the taxes, and then invested the remaining $400 million or so yourself at a paltry 6% growth rate, that pile of money would be worth around $2.3 billion to you after the same 30 years...AFTER TAXES.

As long as you have the discipline to leave the money alone and let the investment managers handle it, taking the lump sum is nearly always a better plan.

The only exception? If tax rates get cut for the 1%, taking your payment as an annuity means that the portion paid to you AFTER the tax cut will be taxed at the lower rate. An annuity ONLY makes sense if you are betting on a tax cut.

34. Buy myself a politician or two
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 07:26 PM
Jan 2016

That's what I told my son last week. Of course, I'd get me some body guards first.

I'd get that lawyer that helped Colbert, and start my own PAC.

But I suppose after consultation with lawyers & accountants, I'd find a nice little house on the water, with a wonderful kitchen, and lots of fir trees outside. During this time, I'd make sure my son & his wife are set up comfortably.

Much of the money would go into a foundation. Because I know first hand the struggles in life, I definitely would help the less fortunate in so many varying ways. I would have a special foundation or trust dedicated to this, where with interest it would grow throughout the years.

I joke about buying politicians, but I would seek info on starting a PAC and a liberal think tank to battle the effects of the Powell Memo, & right wing lies & propaganda. I'm sure I would hire a few DUers for these ideals.

I'm battling Stage IV breast cancer, so I would seek out one of the best oncologists.

For me, put me in the house described above, a reliable car, comfortable shoes, and no worry between utilities and the grocery store, and I'll be happy. Don't need much, & don't want much, other than ease some of the pain and suffering of my fellow Americans.

I was suppose to win last Saturday, I don't know what happened. I blame the Koch Brothers.

5) Set up foundations for causes I want to work on - a first class battered women's shelter and education, help for homeless, a huge aviary and rescue for large birds, scholarships, literacy and tutoring, scientific research for the most promising cures for diseases (and not just expensive treatment) . ...there's so many things I'd like to fund!

49. there's a school here
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 08:03 PM
Jan 2016

that is one of the highest rated public schools in the state, they run the district lines in irregular ways to purposefully avoid low-income pockets in the neighborhood, so they have a low percentage of children who are ELL and who are free/reduced lunch, then they will do various things to run off children who do not perform well on standardized tests.

I would buy every house for sale in the school zone and give them to families who live in the projects and to immigrant families with children.

2. Pay off the mortgages of everyone in my immediate family. Since I no longer have Grandparents, that means my Parents' siblings and their firstborn children.

3. Pay off the mortgages of my best friends. My social circle includes, outside of co-workers, people I've known since elementary school. Probably 30 or so.

4. Start a food bank in my community and establish a trust fund to keep it stocked in perpetuity.

5. Buy a yacht. A big fucking yacht. Preferably wind-powered, with one of those new-fangled wing sails and computer-guided navigation.

6. Buy a Cessna 310 and have it rebuilt from the wheels up. Oh yeah and get a pilot's license.

7. Buy the biggest motor home on wheels, with full-length pop outs on both sides.

1. Spend a whole lot of money on Housing First initiatives. I would even go to Catholic Charities for advice on this as they are doing something very similar as well.

2. No I would not buy a modest house I would buy a huge house big enough for myself all of my children and their partners and their partners children and their children if they decide to have any.

3. I probably would not send my children to college I would put them on the payroll to mange housing for the homeless and other low income people and other charities someone said something about buses that care for the animal companions of homeless and poor people I would be very interested in that too.

4. Hire a lobbyist for poor people and people with disabilities.

5. Take college classes just for the giggles.

6. Buy apartment buildings and keep the rents affordable, this won't be money making, but I do expect rent to keep the projects sustainable.

7. Donate a lot of money to cancer, arthritis, and aids research. Probably more diseases than that, but those are the top three for me.

Buy a half dozen helicopter gunships with the latest high tech night vision and train pilots to hunt down poachers of elephants, gorillas, lions, tigers, rhino, etc. Pay the villagers that are part of the wildlife protection forces in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, etc. back pay for all the good they have done, especially those whose husbands have been killed by poachers leaving them destitute.

Fund private detectives to hunt down those that order these endangered and threatened species to make into end table stands (elephant feet), aphrodisiacs (tiger penis), and other f*cked up sh*t knuckleheads buy because they are f*cking ignorant. Then have the perps arrested if possible, or shamed out of business.

Donate to Sea Shepherd to continue the fight against whalers.

If I had Bill Gates type of money I would be spending my life pissing off trophy hunters and poachers, and enjoying every bit of it.

84. I am not much for lists,
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 11:31 PM
Jan 2016

but I would set up a foundation and any requests for money would go to the foundation. It would be too emotionally taxing to have to deal with those personal requests.

I would not give millions away to friends and extended family. I would not want to be responsible for the repercussions of their sudden wealth as well as my own. If any were in dire straights financially, of course I would direct the foundation to help them.

Building a big house? We have a decent sized home, and we spend almost no time in our living room. Only when we have guests do we ever use the living room. I kind of see a huge house as more of a burden than a necessity.

We have a rustic cabin in the woods. I would add running water, electricity, and wifi. I would not add a microwave.
