GOP Wants To Pass Law Cutting Obama's Retirement Benefits.

The GOP cynically is looking at passing legislation that would reduce what Obama can get compared to past presidents.. They want to limit the size and cost of office space and operating funds after the president leaves office.

The GOP wants to keep diminishing Obama even after he leaves office. They want to make his retirement miserable.

But yes, Republicans are a mean and petty bunch. After Clinton left office, having thwarted the GOP's impeachment, they got him disbarred from the U.S. Supreme Court. Clinton was unlikely to ever appear before the Court in his post-presidency, but the Republicans had to get something after failing to win even a majority vote on any of the articles of impeachment, let alone the two-thirds vote required to remove him.

The Bill

Presidential Allowance Modernization Act

(Sec 2) Allows each former U.S. President a lifetime annual annuity of $200,000 and an annual monetary allowance of $200,000, each adjusted annually for inflation as provided by the Social Security Act. Reduces such annual allowance by the amount that a President's adjusted gross income in a taxable year exceeds $400,000. Denies such annuity and monetary allowance to a former President who holds an appointive or elective position in or under the federal government that pays more than a nominal amount.

Increases from $20,000 to $100,000 the annual annuity of a surviving spouse of a former President, with an annual inflation adjustment to such increased amount as provided by the Social Security Act.

(Sec. 3) Declares that nothing in this Act shall be considered to affect: (1) any provision of law relating to the security or protection of a former President or a family member of the President, or (2) funding to carry out security or protection of the former President.

(Sec. 4) Makes this Act applicable to any individual who is a former President or the widow of a former President as of the date of enactment.

It looks like it was co-sponsored by Cummings. A Democrat.

Truthfully I see nothing wrong with it. Former Presidents are millionaires.

Successful black folks who are a lot smarter than they are, don't they?

I'd really like for Clinton or Sanders, whichever wins next year, to put Obama on the Supreme Court so those racist fuckers have to live with him for a whole extra generation at least. That's really what they deserve. Can you imagine the meltdowns in the confirmation hearings? We may get our first live and full-throated N-bomb on national TV.

Fuck them. Bigots.

The law would apply to ALL former presidents (Bush, Clinton, Bush, Carter) not just Obama. And it is co-sponsored by a Democrat.

Second: It's a very fair law. Clinton has brought in an estimated $89 million in fees since be left office. Bush has, so far, racked up $15 million in fees. A few speeches by them can cover their expenses. This will not affect security

IMO if a former president wants a staff he (or she) should foot the bill for it.
