By Jay Withrow / World-Herald staff writer
A kitten that had its leg amputated Friday helped the Nebraska Humane Society remind pet owners to keep an eye on their cats and dogs when theyre outside in temperatures near or below zero.
The kitten suffered frostbite and a broken back leg last Sunday morning while outside in single-digit temperatures, said Pam Wiese of the Humane Society.
A woman in the Elkhorn area spotted a mother cat attempting to retrieve its kitten from a storm drain, Wiese said. When the cat failed to dislodge the kittens leg, which was frozen to the storm drain, she faithfully stayed with the kitten, Wiese said.
The woman used lukewarm water to free the 11-week-old kittens leg, Wiese said, and she brought the kitten to the Humane Society for emergency care. The skittish mother cat ran off while the woman was helping the kitten, Wiese said.
