http://www.kgw.com/news/4000-artifacts-stored-at-oregon-refuge-held-by-armed-group/15241509?c=nRyan Bundy, one of the leaders of the group occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Oregon, says they have no real interest in the antiquities. Still, their access to the artifacts and maps has some worried that looters could take advantage of the situation.
"There's a huge market for artifacts, especially artifacts that have provenance, where you can identify where they came from," said Carla Burnside, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's refuge archeologist.
More than 300 recorded prehistoric sites are scattered across the refuge, including burial grounds, ancient villages and petroglyphs. Some of the artifacts including spears, stone tools, woven baskets and beads date back 9,800 years.
Armed protestors dont belong here, said Charlotte Rodrique, Burns Paiute Tribal Chair. They continue to desecrate one of our most important sacred sites. They should be held accountable."

The fact that these sovereignty assholes have access to thousands of artifacts and maps to sensitive sites adds a new negative wrinkle to this whole fucked up situation.

(2,778 posts)Weve all been to park visitor centers where they have displays of the archeological artifacts on display from the area. The artifacts that are on display are common artifacts, shards of pottery, lithics, and anything that would be common to the area. For me a greater concern would be what is in files, which would be maps showing locations of sites.
From what Ive read the hacker who is using government computers onsite said he did not access BLM info.

(22,756 posts)and I take it personally... I treasure my time spent at Federal Parks, Forests and Refuges
the people occupying the Malheur Refuge have no concern or respect for life, wildlife, the environment, nor people other than themselves

(12,629 posts)Apparently, the road was built between the kitchen and some other buildings farther away. Not only is this a wildlife refuge, those familiar with the property have indicated there are sensitive archaeological sites, including both Native American burial AND reburial sites, on the lands...
