WINTERSET, Iowa Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is kicking off a swing through Iowa at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, where he received an endorsement from the western film actor's daughter, Aissa Wayne.
The endorsement was announced Tuesday in front of a life-size, rifle-toting model of the actor in full cowboy gear.
Aissa Wayne says the country needs a strong and courageous leader like her father. She said John Wayne would be offering his endorsement if he were still alive.
Trump says he was a big fan of Wayne and that the actor represented strength and power which the American people are looking for.

(10,164 posts)A great example of why being able to deliver lines effectively on a movie set doesn't mean I care to hear anything else that comes out of their mouth. As if we needed any more examples after Reagan...

He was Donald's kind of guy.

(7,309 posts)I mean pretty damn close as in he could fill in as a stunt man close.
But, my dad was the opposite of Marion. He was big guy and a boxer, but was kind to everyone. Always had a funny quip to say, and respected the hell out of you regardless of your station, religion, race/ethnicity. He was just an all around great guy. He was 20 years older than my mom when they met, and he had no problem raising me and my sister, even adopting us both.
And I was hell to raise, but he did it with discipline and, though he never orally expressed "I love you," I knew that he did until the day he died. Every sentence always started with "Son, ..." ... and usually ended, "... what the hell were you thinking" and one particular time, "when you decided to take the car out and wreck it when your mother and I were on vacation." Though, that's not what upset him. There were two things that upset him; if I disrespected my mom, or I didn't wash my dishes. He'd get infuriated at both.
Oh, and my dad actually served. Army Corp of Engineers.
Ask me sometime about how my dad used to box with Joe Louis in the Army (and how they both received a Soldier's Medal).
Great guy, my dad, but he looked almost exactly like John Wayne.
Edit: Oh, and to make him even more remarkable, he was born and grew up in Lafayette, LA. The center of right-wing racism.

(18,837 posts)I know who and what John Wayne was. The reason I referred to him as the "Duke" in my subject line was my way of saying that the daughter "besmirched" the film version of the real person, but yeah, my guess is that if he were still alive, the endorsement would have come from Wayne himself.

I think his daughter has pretty good bead on what the Duke would have thought.

(43,142 posts)And yes, he was a crappy actor. Sorry, but it's true.
So I don't know how much memory there is to be besmirched other than the fact that his image, much like Ronald Reagan, has been unjustly deified posthumously.
