Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat is your worst case/best case scenario if a President Trump happens?
It's something I don't like to think about, but what if our worst nightmare comes to pass and Donald Trump becomes our next president. Setting aside hair on fire, apocalyptic end-of-the-world doomsday predictions, what, realistically, do you think would be the consequences? In other words, let's all admit that he's not going to herd liberals into concentration camps any more that Obama took away everyone's guns, as repeatedly predicted by the right. A Trump presidency would, without a doubt, be a disaster, but what forms would that disaster take? And more importantly, what steps would you take in the wake of a Trump inauguration? (No, I won't be moving to Canada, any more than RW nut jobs moved en masse to Canada when Obama was elected.)

(6,133 posts)I cannot imagine trump being a good president. But the reaction to him could be good like retaking both houses. And if that happens, congress might reject any Supreme Court justice he tries to appoint.
I cannot predict things. The only thing I can do is keep pushing for Democrats.

(9,534 posts)Worst case- detention camps, a rise in hate groups inspired by tRUMP, he appoints a Supreme Ct. justice who rolls back Roe v.. Wade, he insults every world leader and just maybe starts WW III.
Best case - He bullies, humiliates and insults members of his own party in Congress to the point they impeach them.

Not the apocalyptic part though.

(2,188 posts)1) For all his racism, he doesn't seem to pick on black people at all. He said he doesn't have a problem with affirmative action, and Spike Lee has a point with no blacks getting nominated for the awards.
2) He won't oust dictators like Assad. He rightfully says toppling them lead us to ISIS.
3) He called George W. Bush and his war in Iraq a disaster.
Now the negatives:
Way, way too many to list.

(15,071 posts)he will start getting ugly towards black people. The GOP will love it and he will jump in the polls and won't be caught by any of his GOP contenders.

(14,449 posts)Could be playing the game and will not be conservative. He also had millions of woman work for him and I haven't heard any sexual harassment or major problems there.
A lot of potential negatives that are not worth the risk of him as president.

(11,833 posts)massive increases in military spending, less for public schools & social services, exacerbating inequality and screwing the working class. Maybe another stupid & costly war or two. All of which republicans in Congress are requesting. Many suffer.
Best case - as President he governs more to the center, recognizing that to get things he wants he must negotiate with large constituencies who don't want to decrease social spending or increase the deficit. The majority wakes up and starts voting for progressives in every single election starting locally and moving to state and congressional levels. A resistance movement builds and recognizes that we must take part at every level including taking personal responsibility rather than blaming everything on the President.
I'd continue living my life in what I consider an ethical manner.

I could not even imagine worst case but it closely resembles Germany in the late 30s except maybe with a little nuclear holocaust for good measure.

(21,740 posts)Congress. He appoints Supreme Court justices which keep the country fucked up for another 20 years or more. Several wars to deal with as he cuts his own taxes and a major depression.

(12,377 posts)Actually, I think you are pretty close. He will delegate all the presidenting chores, and put on one Yuuuuge reality show. There will be a 24/7 President Trump Show on what used to be MSNBC (viewers will hardly notice the difference, anyway). The Donald eating breakfast in his gilded double king sized bed... The Donald playing golf on his new private course, previously known as the Washington Mall... etc.

(5,614 posts)Trump has no principles or politics except for me first. He might be able to surround himself with worshipers and idolaters, and Trump Inc. will definitely have the inside track on any major construction but cut SocSec or Medicare? Shrink the military budget? Advance the right wing agenda (aka Koch agenda)? Most likely not.
President Trump will do whatever he thinks works best for him and nobody else.
Keep in mind Trump is not actually a stupid man. You don't thrive in NYC if you are, and certainly not pull off the kinds of flim flam near-fraud that marks his career.
Imagine Nixon without any ideals or programs or principles. His VP would be a 2016 version of Spiro Agnew.
Disaster? Not at all. That'll come when JEB! beats him in 2020.

(1,683 posts)A President Trump would have a rough time with Republicans in the House and Senate because they wouldn't kowtow to his every wish, but would have their own agendas. He would have to govern by working both sides of the aisle for stuff he wants. The responsibilities of the office would surely force him into not taking extreme doctrinaire positions. He would still have outrageous news conferences and say outrageous things.
While I don't think Trump is the exact clone of Teddy Roosevelt, a lot of the dynamics would be there. Teddy didn't hew the party line and often said (and did) outrageous things.

(37,428 posts)Even if Trump doesn't just quit when it turns into work (he will as he always has), bag men for the billionaires have plenty of dirt on him and will encourage his exit.
Right now, he's enjoying being driven from one cheering crowd to the next. It's not going to remain fun much longer, and that's when he'll go.

(12,051 posts)Democrat -- one who'll continue moderate policies. And maybe use the bully pulpit to get single payer because it's business-friendly. Even if he truly is a Republican philosophically, it's hard for me to believe he is as racist as he sounds; from all reports, he has never been racist or sexist in his business dealings.
Worst case -- he's losing his frikkin' mind and loves the idea of turning the US into a version of Nazi Germany.

(16,245 posts)I'm thinking this man has no scruples and, because he comes from the world of business, thinks anything goes.
Possibly a Bob McDonnell scenario, but that would take years to develop and would only result in prison time after he leaves office.
No, I'm guessing a Nixon Dirty Tricks type issue.

The more he is personally involved, the more likely the project is to fail (see Trump Casino and his Scottish golf course projects). He's too lazy to do much damage. Of course, just having the racist dope around ruins our standing in the world.

(67,104 posts)as a tool, of course. He's a business guy and a survivor, so, I think he will govern from a business perspective. I'm not sure if that is good or bad, but my hunch is a lot of the racist crap will fade away. If he got the US out of this stupid service economy, I think that would be a major plus. Also, if he could revamp some of the inane trade agreements, if even possible, that could be a plus.
Then again, he could go off the deep end and envision the US as the return of Nazi Germany. Bottom line, it's hard to predict ... What is predictable, it could be frightening. I don't think there is a middle ground, my hunch is it will be either good or bad.

(37,457 posts)Best case: He drops all the racist crap and really most-stupid crap he's said, and governs as a moderate Republican, having periodic fits of televised rage because Congress won't snap to. Democrats block his most conservative stuff. He's a one-term President.
Worst case: He really means all the racist crap, and tries to get Congress to go along. Democrats plus a few sane Republicans spend four years blocking him. He manages to piss off Putin, North Korea and Iran enough to set us back 40 years but no nuclear war gets started (I think Trump is smarter than that). Mexico starts loathing us. Canada wonders if we've truly gone insane this time. Our allies start thinking of us like they did under GWB43. He's a one term President, and goes in the Hall of Shame next to GWB43.
Hopefully I just wasted my time.

(53,950 posts)However, I as a recently legally married gay man, I really do fear the replacement of a single Supreme Court judge and I will no longer be married! Too many people, mostly straight, but a few gays ones too, don't realize the battle is far from over. I am not comfortable, I am simply content, for now. I also fear for the health and rights' of women. Racism will continue to rise, against a variety of ethnic groups. The wealth gap will greatly increase, possibly leading to another Depression. The US' reputation will dip so low, even life-long allies will distance themselves.
For all those that think Trump can't win, I have one letter for you: W!
