Five Dead, Two Critically Hurt In Canada School Shooting: Prime Minister

Five people were killed and two critically injured in a school shooting in a remote part of Saskatchewan on Friday and a suspect is in custody, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

Trudeau did not give a motivation for the shooting in La Loche, about 600 km (375 miles) north of the city of Saskatoon. But La Loche acting Mayor Kevin Janvier told the Canadian Press the incident may have started at the suspect's home.

“I’m not 100 percent sure what’s actually happened but it started at home and ended at the school," Janvier said.

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, which has stricter gun laws than the United States. With five dead, La Loche would be the country's worst school shooting since 14 college students were killed at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.

"Obviously this is every parent's worst nightmare," said Trudeau, who was in Davos, Switzerland for the annual World Economic Forum.

it said on the news which is actually pretty big for a remote community. Having lived in a similar northern community of the same size I can say that police resources are often spread pretty thin, and firearms are plentiful. Oh, and usually no trauma center at the local hospital - if there is a local hospital at all. When I moved to a similar remote community after having lived near a big city all of my life there was a bit of a culture shock to say the least.

“Right now, La Loche is devastated,” said an emotional First Nation chief after at least five people were killed and a suspect was taken into custody after a daytime shooting at the community school in the northern Saskatchewan community.

Those in the remote Dene town of about 3,000 people on the eastern shore of Lac La Loche were left searching for answers and details but found themselves with only more questions in the wake of the shooting, approximately six hours north of Saskatoon.

“The community usually pulls together really strong in times like this,” said Clearwater River Dene Nation Chief Teddy Clark on Friday."

sniip ~ "Acting Mayor Kevin Janvier said RCMP confirmed to him that one person was in custody but he did not know anything about the suspect. According to The Canadian Press, the community’s fire chief said a boy with a gun was in custody."

One was the 23 year old daughter of the mayor. The shooter appears to have killed two siblings before going to the school.
