Dear National Review And Other Conservatives: The Right Was Trash Long Before Trump

To hear conservatives tell it, theirs is a movement filled with men in tweed coats, smoking on pipes as the intellectually puzzle over the issues of the day. Now, along comes short-fingered vulgarian Donald Trump to upset their apple cart.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The conservative movement not only outsourced its intellectual thinking to the black, immigrant, woman bashers on AM talk radio, its so-called intellectual outlets like National Review have been steeped in these forms of discrimination as well. Whether that’s bashing Martin Luther King in the ’60s or bashing gay people a few weeks ago, the apple not only doesn’t fall far from the tree — it’s the same apple.

Conservatism has not begun to fully reconcile what Trump actually means because to do so will obliterate fictions it has built up for itself over the years. For the movement and its attached Republican Party to engage in true self-examination would then require an admission of culpability for its legacy of exclusion and discrimination. And we can’t have that!

So, instead, the right again engages in Kabuki Theater. They decide that only with the emergence of Donald Trump came all this unpleasantness, and if and when he is defeated they can again say they did nothing wrong, and that it was the virginal conservatism who was once failed by the world, and not the other way around.

is the Frankenstein Monster the reichwing has been building in the basement for the last 40 years. Now he's loose, roaming the countryside, causing untold mayhem and destruction and there's no way to deactivate him.

They must never have seen a Frankenstein movie when they were kids. They all end the same way: with the Monster pulling the castle down on top of his creator to the cheers of the angry torch-and-pitchfork wielding mob. All that's missing so far are the giant electrical zaps from the giant Jacob's Ladders in the near background. Which will probably come along soon at the rate things are devolving.

May they all sink into the sulfur pit.
