Meat of the Matter: Time to end it
By Dan Murphy January 22, 2016 | 3:08 pm EST
As the ill-advised occupation of a wildlife refuge headquarters by a bunch of so-called freedom lovers drags on into yet another week, its time to put an end to this running travesty.
If the so-called occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge were led by anyone other than members of Nevadas notorious Bundy clan, it might be a little more tolerable.
But to have a group so closely identified with ranching become the focal point of this ridiculous takeover is unacceptable. Ammon Bundy and the rest of his motley crew are disgracing all of animal agriculture by association.
Its bad enough that these cowards chose federal property that is literally miles from nowhere for their insurrection, or that they picked the New Years holiday weekend when no one was around to conduct their raid.
There is no purpose, no agenda, no rationale for this gang of armed yahoos to be squatting inside of the wildlife refuge office building. For what? To reclaim a bird sanctuary for the people?
No matter how you slice it, the Bundys are deadbeats and criminals, not patriots. Theyre no different from any other perpetrators holding people or property at gunpoint.
If these so-called militiamen really believed in their hollow rhetoric about the sanctity of We the People, they would acknowledge that above all, what makes America exceptional isnt its armed citizenry, its the primacy of the law.

(110,900 posts)At some point, those yahoos have got to realize that even with packages of their favorite cigarettes and chew arriving, they have very little support from most of the people they claim to represent, people who realize that the BLM is protecting the land from overgrazing by big time ranchers like Bundy, even if they don't like it much, themselves.

(19,326 posts)I'm sure my fellow Oregonians will love this take on the Bundy Terrorist take-over. Many
Oregon citizens have raised hell about this, including our Democratic Governor Kate Brown.
That should curdle their gherkins.
Dan Murphy's got skills. Good writing. Thanks.

(86,048 posts)a more appropriate perspective... they seem more like some old western teevee drama where some miscreants wander into the territory and take over a farmhouse while the man ain't around and terrorize the wife and kids till the sheriff shows up and...
Bullies without a clue.

Unfortunately, the only law they recognize or respect is state law, and this is a Federal law issue. So they probably won't even pay attention to this. It does stand out for the rest of us though.
