Support for abortion rights continues to dwindle- shocking numbers

A majority of Americans support restrictions on legalized abortions, including those who identify themselves as abortion rights supporters, according to a new Marist poll commissioned by the Knights of Columbus.

The poll finds that 81 percent of Americans would restrict abortion to – at most – the first three months of pregnancy. The Marist survey also shows that 82 percent of women and 66 percent of self-identified abortion rights supporters favor limiting the procedure to the first trimester of pregnancy.

1. They make it very hard to get an abortion so that it takes a long time to arrange it

It takes a long time get the money to jump through the hoops and arrange a place to stay long enough to get through whatever appointments and waiting period are required, and then they make it so that you have to get it done before most people are able to arrange the travel, time off, and money.

If it were very easy and cheap to get an abortion in the first three months, I wouldn't feel quite so angry at people who think like this. But they make it very hard to get an abortion that soon.

If anything, most Americans accept abortion. Since Roe v. Wade, expansions of conraceptive methods and their availability have prevented unwanted pregnancies in the first place. That could change if the RWingers get a chance to defund Planned Parenthood who have been providing the methods for pregnancy prevention.

The key question has stems limiting the categories by trimester, which IMHO would tend to steer people who think in terms of fetal viability to chose the first trimester response. There was apparently another question setting a cut off at 20 weeks and that had higher positive response.

It's troubling to me as a survey professional that they used closed ended response categories and only a few data points. Complex moral opinions are best teased out with a battery of questions, preferably in a standardized scale, or by using open-ended responses with interviewer probing.

Don't get me started, either.

A lot of people don't like to hear it but it is a fact that women in this country had to fight for the right to vote, the right to get equal pay for equal work, the right to get a divorce, the right to contraception and the right to get a safe and legal abortion.

And all these years since Roe v. Wade we are STILL fighting for the right to safe and legal abortion services.

For all their talk about national security and economic recovery, the first thing right-wingers do when they get in office is restrict women's rights.

If the woman decides to donate the fetus to science then planned parenthood is reimbursed only for their costs.

My wife had to abort our child at six months due to a major birth defect and she donated it to science.

I was raised Catholic and thought I was "pro-life" until I thought I was pregnant in college in 1979 when I was 21. My first thought was how can I get an abortion ASAP. It was a false scare but it made me realize what a hypocrite I was. I admit that I was a hypocrite. I learned from that. I have been vehemently pro-choice since then.

25. Yes, I had a similar experience. Thinking I was pregnant at 43 years of age and in love

with my new (second) husband, I knew I couldn't be pregnant yet I was sad. It was a false alarm but I didn't like having to make that decision...

Being pregnant at 43 with all of those risks and complications would have scared me to death.

It was bad enough at 21. I just knew I couldn't deal with it. False alarm, but it woke me up to contraception at all times and being pro-choice.

I have a wonderful daughter who I love more than anything. But every woman should have the right to choose. I pretty much quit the Catholic faith after that experience.

35. I had two daughters in college and a son who was drifting at the time.

I had to get a job in a new city where I had moved to be with my husband who had gotten a job here. It was a very uncertain time.

Now I look back and I wonder why I was so concerned. The whole idea of going through a pregnancy and childbirth at that age was out of the question, altho women do it all the time.

But, it was just the early warning of menopause coming on. Just not right away.

If abortion is illegal, who should go to prison, the woman, the doctor or both?
That's really what we're talking about here.

I am a bit skeptical of a poll done by an arm of the Catholic Church. 60% of women consider abortion "morally wrong?" I don't believe it. The "consensus" is in the mind of the CEO of the Knights of Columbus.

i am skeptical, although i do believe that most, even prochoicers, accept some limitations regsrding how far along and for what reason. for example, a woman in her 8th month who decides she doesn't want to have a baby has different options than a woman in her 8th month who might die if she continues to term.
