They're moving forward in Leaps and Bounds.
"The first rocket to fly above the Karman Line and then land vertically upon the earth... is now the first to have done it TWICE."
The same rocket. Twice.
There is hope for the future...

(24,853 posts)As far as lift capacity all I know is it carried a capsule that separated and returned separately, so I'd guess that configured differently it would easily have the capability to send a satellite into orbit.
I believe at the moment it's designed as a passenger carrier though.

(188 posts)New Shepard is sub-orbital only. Blue Origin is working on a next gen engine to go into an orbital system, but I haven't found any estimates on size or performance yet.
edit to add - Actually, didn't Rutan's SpaceShip One already do this?

(24,853 posts)Plus, I'd venture a guess that the concept and machinery involved in Bezos' launch/land/50 day turnaround/launch/land could be adapted to larger, payload carrying rockets.
Not to mention this article was written the day after Bezos was successful the first time. It seems kinda knee-jerky.

(10,362 posts)Will make current fortunes look puny. Imagine the platinum group and gold so cheap we can use it for industrial purposes. Platinum returned to earth as giant foam spheres, floating at 60mph to the ground. Or space stations made with 3d printers using metals already in space.
We're on the verge of a revolution that will change the world forever.

(10,362 posts)Bezos's design for a re-landing attempt looks very stable. Can't wait for him to attempt it from a greater altitude.... like from orbit.
