3. Then what would you call the cartoon on the left?

Everyone stereotypes. Even you. It's literally human nature to make mental shortcuts based on past experiences. Some just happen to be more accurate than others.

Stereotyping Muslims as either terrorists or nice ladies is still stereotyping Muslims.

All young black men are gangsters or college students.

All gay men are either cowboys or ballet dancers.

All women are either whores or Madonnas.

Shall I go on?

5. They should have both cartoons be of the same gender

Otherwise, they are kind of stacking the deck.

Or even, how about a female ISIS and a male non-ISIS representative?

6. ISIS are Muslims.

This cartoon seems very much "no true Scotsman" They call themselves Muslims, they read from the Koran, they believe in Sharia Law. I fail to see how they are not Muslims. They fit the definition by probably any definition. However, of course no liberal or moderate Muslim should have to answer for ISIS's crimes in the same way no liberal or moderate Christian should ever have to answer for Crazy fundamentalists Christians who commit terrorism like Eric Rudolph. Also, I as an atheist shouldn't have to answer for Stalin. However, I don't think this cartoon is grounded in reality because it implies ISIS is not a Muslim group. It very much is.

8. All Muslims believe in Sharia law. It's inextricably part of Islam.

That is the danger. Islam is incompatible with Western-style democracy.

Sometimes I wonder what DU is turning into. All that sounds like exactly what the far-right says about Muslims.

"All Muslims believe in Sharia law."

All REAL ('real' in whose eyes) Muslims?

"Islam is incompatible with Western-style democracy."

Tell that to Keith Ellison.

In the 21st century who stereotypes ALL of anything as believing the same thing.
13. That's not true.

Many Muslims do not believe in Sharia Law. I don't know enough about Islam to speak on its tenants. I just don't want to do what this cartoon does and be a non Muslim telling Muslims who are or not. I'll take their word for it (unless someone is running for public office and has a good reason to lie about religion). However, I know there are very liberal Muslims who follow it more for its culture, and far more radical ones (like ISIS for example), and the same is true for Christianity here. Fred Phelps and MLK Jr were members of the same religion. Infact, both were even Baptists.

looked a lot like the Muslim on the right, until she looked like the Muslim on the left on 2 Dec.

Not all terrorists are Muslims and not all Muslims are terrorists. But identifying a Muslim terrorist, just like identifying a non-Muslim terrorist, isn't as simple as the cartoon would like to make us believe.
