You say it's snowin' in Brooklyn
Well if it's snowin' in Brooklyn I'd say
snow's what we've got"

Potentially our biggest snowstorm ever.
LiberalElite
(14,691 posts)we thought that Maryland/DC/Virginia would be having the biggest and ours would be a minor inconvenience. The joke was on us.

(18 posts)How does NYC even get rid of that much snow? Where does it put it?
LiberalElite
(14,691 posts)next to a huge pile of snow that had been removed from the streets by the plows - the Sanitation Dept. has a routine whereby they first deposit the snow into piles along the way then they move in mobile melters and dump the snow into it and the water gets sent into the river. I erroneously like to think everything originates in NYC but this contraption comes from Canada. It's a brilliant idea:

(18 posts)Wow, that's a lot of work just to clear the city.
LiberalElite
(14,691 posts)12 hour shifts to clear it all. They also hire day laborers to shovel the crosswalks and bus stops. There's 6,000 miles worth of street here.

(35,300 posts)I was going to school in Hoboken and overnighting at friends' near campus in 2/78.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeastern_United_States_blizzard_of_1978
Didn't feel well as the snow started, had the flu the next morning. Couldn't get to the dorm. When the storm was over, couldn't find my car. Drifts had formed over the cars on the street.
Trudged through 2-3 feet of snow and drifts back to the dorm room.
Transferred to another school in spring term 1979 and was at my parents' house in Baltimore for the President's Day storm a year later with 20" of snow. Car again vanished under drifts. At least I was stranded at home. And not sick.

(51,076 posts)and when I finally got back home I could only make it to about 200 yards of the front door and had to walk the rest. I was beat long before I got to the house. Man that much snow is hard to walk in for sure.

(51,076 posts)several years ago we had something like that here and it was the biggest snow I'd ever seen, except when I was in the navy up in the mountains in California. Anyways hope you have plenty of eats and drinks and fun things to do for a few days.

(51,076 posts)take care of the kiddies first then worry about yourself.
I'm a cat person but my wife isn't so guess what :bummer:
We don't have any cats. My border collie of 15 plus years passed away about a year back so I'm pet less now. Sad times some days.
My wife has a couple years to retirement and I'm already there so I have the house all to myself during the day and I'm here to tell you it gets mighty lonely sometimes. Hence my spending so much time here at my second home with my online family. DU
Stay safe, warm and have fun
