Stephen Colbert explains why he thinks Donald Trump doesn't really want to be president at all

Colbert may have been using humor, but I think he is right about this.

Stephen Colbert has an interesting theory about Donald Trump's desire to run for president. He thinks the politician's outlandish comments are cries for help.

He laid out the theory on Monday's "Late Show" after Trump told an audience in Iowa over the weekend that his voters are so loyal, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody. And I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?"

Colbert's thinking comes days before the first primary vote, as many in the Republican party contemplate what's in store for them in the election. The National Review published an entire "Against Trump" issue with essays by prominent Republicans. And yet, Trump still holds the No. 1 position in the polls.

"That's right. Trump's voters will not leave," Colbert said. "I think that represents a huge problem for one person: Donald Trump. Because when I hear this man say 'nothing can stop me from winning, not even shooting people,' I don't hear an appeal to voters — I hear a cry for help."

He got into it because no one cared. Herman Cain sold a lot of pizzas and books. Hucka-hucka-huckabee got a tv show. Running for president as a GOP candidate is a good career move. It moves product. I honestly don't believe Trump™ ever believed he'd even be in the race at this point, let alone being the front runner. He was just boosting brand recognition. Yet something went wrong along the way. People actually started cheering at his rallies, crowds gathered, he soared in polls. WTF? Now what?

So now he's just saying the most outlandish things he can come up with, just to see what it will take to make people realize it's all been a big joke. Why would this billionaire want to take a $450,000 a year job that requires him to work 24-7 when he could be bangin' hot European broads and maybe have a three way with his own daughter?

Trump™ does not want to be president. He is crying out for the idiots to go home. But then he'd have to wrestle with the public humiliation of "failure." This is a modern day Shakespeare play unfolding.

to diagnose a stroke, or some other serious medical condition, in order to bow out "gracefully".

Whatever the reason given, it will have to appear to be beyond his control.

although he hasn't a clue what the job actually entails. He thinks it would be just another version of his reality show where he got to humiliate and fire people. Sort of like Ronald Reagan thought that being President would be just like playing one in a movie, and recall how disastrously his time in office turned out to be.

If Trump actually becomes the Republican nominee, he's going to be in for a big surprise as to just what's involved in campaigning. I doubt he's even remotely up to it. And does anyone think the Koch Brothers and all the billionaire right-wingers will support him and pay for ads for him? I'm not sure about that.

Does he already travel with body guards? I have no idea, but if he does, the Secret Service protection might not be that much of a change. And of course, the presence of the Secret Service didn't put a damper on JFK's affairs while President, nor on Bill Clinton's.

he questioned his actual wealth and then wondered why no one ever tried to "build a better machine" and compete with Bloomberg, - hint "conspiracy by the Jews to control Wall Street"
Wolf just let it all pass.

Democracy is messy and slow-moving, not a good place for a strongman dictator used to snapping his fingers and watching people jump to serve his every whim. He'd get bored and be ready to move on after about a month of getting nothing accomplished. He probably got in just for the ego gratification.
