From what I've seen, that seems to be a prerequisite.

What he's building is obvious; a coalition of the barstool/Yahoo comments (depending on demographics) loudmouth simplistic bigots with no room for nuance or introspection or empathy behind their piggy little bloodshot eyes.

It's also obvious how he's doing it. He's talking like them with their spittled braggadocio writ large with no party elders or campaign funders to rein him in. He is them, just given a 24/7 media megaphone and everybody else playing by country club not barroom/Yahoo rules

What I'm not sure of though is:

Does he really believe it? No he's no genius but he's a showman and a reader of the zeitgeist who has enriched himself well beyond his silver-spoon start by knowing how to complete the con. Is he doing the biggest con of them all for fun/bragging rights or does he really want to become another Il Duce? Even more worryingly, could he, granted the opportunity, stop becoming another Il Duce even if he doesn't believe it all himself?

Are there enough people that disengaged and short sighted to go with the guy at the bar and vote him in? Demographics are supposed to save us but here a Bernie parallel really is legitimate; both need previously uninvolved voters to become involved to win. At DU we assume those uninvolved might be informed idealists who see insufficient reason to vote for the same ol' same ol', but there are many millions of uninformed mouthbreathers who also see insufficient reason. Are ther more of the latter than sensible folk far enough removed from hyperpartisanship to not just click R on autopilot? Dunno. Starting to see the possibility.

Best case - he gets cut out by the GOP insiders and runs 3rd party to spite them. Problem - his pledged delegate count will likely be too high to make it so.
