On this day in Labor History the year was 1787. That was the day known as Shays’ Rebellion.

The United States was a new nation, and the Constitution had not yet been written.

The revolutionary army had won the war with Britain, but the young nation was mired in debt.

1. that is an uprising by the "working class"?

Seems more like the deadbeat class. They went into debt and then got mad when they were unable to pay their debts.

Ironically, my computer is now playing Def Leppard's 'promises' - "I won't make promises I can't keep."

Just because I am working class does not mean I feel I shouldn't have to repay my debts.

2. It was mostly poor farmers in rural Mass. who...

hadn't been paid much for their produce or at all for their Revolutionary War service.

There were also the problems of taxes being raised and debt squeezing by coastal "big business" at the time.

As with so many historical events, things are not so clear.
