Some people are just not cut out to be parents...

Some are so stupid I wonder how they remember to breathe or eat.

Child hospitalized after eating pot candies in Sheboygan

A 3-year-old child was hospitalized after eating candies containing THC, the main component of marijuana that causes people to get high, according to Sheboygan Police.

On Sunday, officers were called to Sheboygan Aurora Memorial Medical Center for the report of a child who was “minimally responsive.”

Tests revealed THC in the child’s system, police said. The child was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

Investigators say the family had a birthday party on the previous day in which people were using marijuana. The child’s father left some THC-laced candies on a table in the house within reach of children, police say.

The parents discovered the candies were missing and assumed the child had eaten them.

The child’s 28-year-old father was arrested on a charge of Child Neglect Causing Bodily Harm

The 25-year-old mother is facing a charge of Obstructing, according to Sheboygan Police.

The father had obtained the pot candies from Colorado, where marijuana is legal.

According to my Mom, my Dad had a mixed drink of some kind, and I toddled up to it, and drank it.

Mom said I turned purple and screamed.

I didn't need medical help, but I sure had a reaction!

Is my take as well.

It is very unlikely this kid was in any real danger.

There have been lots of studies done on the toxicity of THC and they have all basically said it is virtually impossible to OD on it.

There have been a number of scientific studies on the main chemical in marijuana, THC. This drug is a cannabinoid and in the field of science known as, tetrahydrocannabinol. These studies are pretty conclusive on the fact that THC is a “psychoactive” substance and can cause people to become high when ingested, but they have not found any evidence that it is toxic to the body.
In order to determine how much of a drug would be fatal, scientists came up with a formula known as “lethal dosage.” They then test a substance until 50% of the test animals in the lab die. The formula is known as the LD-50. With this formula, it shows that very small animals such as; rats and mice, can take in as much as 1000mg per kilogram before they die. Larger animals did not even reach the LD-50 even giving them as much as 3000mg per kilogram of body weight.
What this means is that a person who weighs 140 pounds or about 63 kilograms would need to take in over 4 pounds of marijuana at once to reach the same levels as the large animal study and this still would has not been proven to be a fatal dosage. These studies have been ongoing over 30 years and researchers have yet to see a severe adverse event with the drug.

"We told you so" seems pretty appropriate in this case. Short of locking it up in a safe, it's pretty damn difficult to keep candy out of the reach of children.

But you have to be a total ducking morin to bring them to a house with young kids.

And I honestly wonder what the liability would be. What were the damages, for one thing? Maybe the ER bill and a really good night's sleep for a toddler. Could you sue, say, Jack Daniels if the parents of a toddler left the bottle out in the table?

If they know candy is in the home, they will relentlessly lust after it. The problem with keeping it locked up is the child still knows where it is, so if you ever forget to lock it up, even for a short period of time, the child is going to be into it. It's not like any of those other things where if you forget to lock it up a time or two the chances are nothing will ever come from it, and furthermore when it comes time to lock up the excess stash, the adult is going to be stoned, and vigilance is the first thing that goes out the window.

It's not very complicated for people to make those themselves. That's not the same thing as making a profit by selling them commercially.

Another pitfall is regardless of how big of a problem this is or isn't, any state that tries to legalize cannabis is going to be faced with people on the other side of the debate who are going to make think of the children arguments.

No "childproof" packaging is truly child proof. They are just designed to keep certain aged kids out of the container for a certain length of time.

I'm not against all ingestables, but the ones that both look and taste just like candy are a bad idea.

It's one of the active, but not psychoactive, cannabinoids in marijuana. It could've cleared up the high pretty quickly, or at least greatly ameliorated the effects.

CBD's are non-psychoactive cannabinoids and have many positive effects in the body.

They do not interfere or distrupt the binding of THC to receptors in the brain, which is the only way to 'clear up that high'.

I'd like to know where you came up with that. I'm happy to be wrong.

It's just not intoxicating or even notable. CBD, for instance, helps reduce frequency and effect of seizures -- a psychoactive effect. CBD is linked to wakefulness, also a psychoactive effect.

Here's one of many studies discussing CBD's anti-intixicating effect on THC.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3797438/

There's a bunch more studies out there if you care to Google a bit (I'm at a filtered-Internet computer until tonight, so looking up pot information isn't easy).

And that they helped "clear up that high" caused by THC. Completely opposite from what you first claimed and completely wrong.

Maybe you should look up some pot info, cause you seem to have no idea what your talking about.

I have a sister and brother in law who did drugs in front of their children. I know this is nothing like what that 3 year is going thru, but you have to ask the question what in the world people are thinking of? It has been quite of few years back and they(at least I hope) don't do drug at all, anymore. I prayer that this young child has no prolong issues from this.

Since one cannot overdose on cannabis, this child had an experience it didn't understand and was simply scared. Being 3, this incident will be long forgotten by her 4th or 5th bday. The child will be fine.

As for the parents.... They should be locked up, for being idiots.
