So here's the deal. Our service tonight sucked. Took 20 minutes to get water, 40 minutes for an appetizer and over an hour for our entree. People all around us were making fun of the restaurant & how bad the service was. Yeah, it was pretty terrible. But, it was very obvious that the issue was being short staffed, not the server. He was running around like crazy and never acted annoyed with any table. At one point we counted he had 12 tables plus the bar. More than any one person could handle! As I sat there and watched him run back & forth and apologize for the wait, I said to Steven... Wow, this used to be us. Waiting tables. I don't miss it at all and I never loved that job. I did it for the tips. Steven and I agreed it would feel good to make this guys night when he would probably be getting minimal to no tips due to slow service. We walked out before he saw this and I'm not posting this for a pat on the back. I'm just sharing this as a friendly reminder to think of the entire situation, before you judge. And always always always remember where you came from. with Steven Schultz.

It's hard work, serving people and for the same money as you made in the 80's it ain't worth it.

(86,536 posts)the service/tourist industry for quite some time and I have noticed, particularly last year, the increase in clients showing little or no respect, absolute disdain and rudeness to those who are there to serve in some capacity. I am not exactly sure where all that comes from, certainly there are a lot of very nice people but I have seen a marked increase in the "touron from hell" this past year like no other.
It's getting to be harder work for little or no increase each year and it is also manufactured to bring in J-1 workers to fill the void created. J-1s don't have to be paid above minimum wage and there is a tax incentive for the employers. Around here, in the summer, you don't normally find waitresses and sandwich makers who speak English as their first language.

Unfortunately, many places are going that route. Sign of the times. Cutting back on service but definitely not cutting prices.

(55,981 posts)We went to a well know Aussie restaurant. And had the same experience. After we did order our server was obviously afraid to come to our table so we flagged her down and made it clear that we recognized the problem. She said the manager sent people home and they were understaffed all around. When we left we gave her a very good tip and she started to cry. We wrote the regional office and complained about the under staffing.
