Obama vetting Iowa Judge Jane Kelly for SCOTUS

Last edited Fri Mar 4, 2016, 05:00 AM - Edit history (1)

All those up in arms with their hair on fire and screaming that the president was going to nominate repug Gov. Sandoval to the Supreme Court can rest a little easier.

Kelly is an Eighth Circuit federal judge now who has already been confirmed for that post. She is also from Iowa, the same state as Senator Grassley who has praised her highly, and who also just happens to be head of the Senate Judiciary Committee which holds hearings for federal judge confirmations.

I won't mention that thing about chess, but Obama certainly knows how to apply pressure.

First a repug's name is leaked, just leaked mind you (Sandoval), then it is made known that a judge from Grassley's own state who he's already confirmed once is being vetted.

I love it.

Someone asked Notorious R.B.G. when there would be enough women on the Court. She replied, "When there are nine."

Honestly despite her politics I'd even love Justice O'Conner to still be around to see that (I'm a fan of hers in a weird way).

God it's going to be rough going for a while for them.

They have to be a master politician to come out unscathed.

4. That's one way to look at it. Another is to not let the repugs get away with . . .

their dereliction of duty and their unprecedented obstruction of this president's constitutional duty.

8. It's only "rough going" if she gets called to congressional hearings

Since the senate leader is going to ignore a nomination, it's not rough at all. It's nothing.

Charles Grassley Faces Formidable Challenger in Iowa Senate Race

Democrats on Thursday unleashed a furious assault on Senator Charles E. Grassley, the Iowa Republican and Judiciary Committee chairman who has become the face of his party’s refusal to hold a hearing on President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court.

As Mr. Grassley listened to his critics in the Senate chamber, a potentially strong Democratic challenger unexpectedly stepped forward in Iowa to run against him. It was another sign of increasing pressure on Mr. Grassley, whose bid for a seventh term had been all but assured before the Supreme Court vacancy arose.

On the Senate floor, several Democrats berated Mr. Grassley for a full hour as Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the minority leader, has done for much of the last two weeks. “This is obstruction and chaos,” Mr. Reid said. .
...
Mr. Grassley could have anticipated the fury in the Senate. It was less likely that he contemplated the prospect of facing someone like Ms. Judge, who has been a political fixture in Iowa for decades, serving in the State Senate, as secretary of agriculture — the first woman to hold that post — and then as lieutenant governor.
