Religion is the root of a lot of stupidity and evil.

But, they do quite a lot of good things. Food pantries, shelters for homeless and also for battered women, to countless of programs oversea.

Mind you, I hate organized religion. If there is a God, I doubt He would have let men bastardized His word. To say its evil, is bit of a stretch.

Small doses of religion are fine, generally speaking.

And yes, religion historically has been the root of a lot of evil, war, oppression, destruction. Right now there is ISIS.

Especially fundamentalist Christianity, as personified by Ted Cruz.

there are about 3 dozen churches for a population of around 10,000. We have four in my little town of 400 year round residents. Of all those churches, ONE has a food pantry, TWO contribute to shelter for homeless and battered women, and I honestly don't know how many contribute to programs overseas.
Our most successful food pantry and help center is a secular group that survives on fund raisers and private donations while churches rake in tax exempt money for the preachers' new deck. The secular group (also tax exempt) has lost a few grants and some donations from churches because they refuse to ask for proof of citizenship from people in need. I've volunteered for them and know this to be a fact.
